  1. 21:1Read in the mushaf ↗

Iqtaraba lilnnasi hisabuhum wahum fee ghaflatin muʿridoona

[The time of] their account has approached for the people, while they are in heedlessness turning away.

  2. 21:2Read in the mushaf ↗

Ma yateehim min thikrin min rabbihim muhdathin illa istamaʿoohu wahum yalʿaboona

No mention [i.e., revelation] comes to them anew from their Lord except that they listen to it while they are at play

  3. 21:3Read in the mushaf ↗

Lahiyatan quloobuhum waasarroo alnnajwa allatheena thalamoo hal hatha illa basharun mithlukum afatatoona alssihra waantum tubsiroona

With their hearts distracted. And those who do wrong conceal their private conversation, [saying], "Is this [Prophet] except a human being like you? So would you approach magic while you are aware [of it]?"

  4. 21:4Read in the mushaf ↗

He [the Prophet (ﷺ)] said, "My Lord knows whatever is said throughout the heaven and earth, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing."

  5. 21:5Read in the mushaf ↗

Bal qaloo adghathu ahlamin bali iftarahu bal huwa shaʿirun falyatina biayatin kama orsila alawwaloona

But they say, "[The revelation is but] a mixture of false dreams; rather, he has invented it; rather, he is a poet. So let him bring us a sign just as the previous [messengers] were sent [with miracles]."

  6. 21:6Read in the mushaf ↗

Ma amanat qablahum min qaryatin ahlaknaha afahum yuminoona

Not a [single] city which We destroyed believed before them, so will they believe?

  7. 21:7Read in the mushaf ↗

Wama arsalna qablaka illa rijalan noohee ilayhim faisaloo ahla alththikri in kuntum la taʿlamoona

And We sent not before you, [O Muḥammad], except men to whom We revealed [the message], so ask the people of the message [i.e., former scriptures] if you do not know.

  8. 21:8Read in the mushaf ↗

Wama jaʿalnahum jasadan la yakuloona alttaʿama wama kanoo khalideena

And We did not make them [i.e., the prophets] forms not eating food, nor were they immortal [on earth].

  9. 21:9Read in the mushaf ↗

Thumma sadaqnahumu alwaʿda faanjaynahum waman nashao waahlakna almusrifeena

Then We fulfilled for them the promise, and We saved them and whom We willed and destroyed the transgressors.

  10. 21:10Read in the mushaf ↗

Laqad anzalna ilaykum kitaban feehi thikrukum afala taʿqiloona

We have certainly sent down to you a Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] in which is your mention. Then will you not reason?

  11. 21:11Read in the mushaf ↗

Wakam qasamna min qaryatin kanat thalimatan waanshana baʿdaha qawman akhareena

And how many a city which was unjust have We shattered and produced after it another people.

  12. 21:12Read in the mushaf ↗

Falamma ahassoo basana itha hum minha yarkudoona

And when they [i.e., its inhabitants] perceived Our punishment, at once they fled from it.

  13. 21:13Read in the mushaf ↗

[Some angels said], "Do not flee but return to where you were given luxury and to your homes - perhaps you will be questioned."

  14. 21:14Read in the mushaf ↗

Qaloo ya waylana inna kunna thalimeena

They said, "O woe to us! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."

  15. 21:15Read in the mushaf ↗

Fama zalat tilka daʿwahum hatta jaʿalnahum haseedan khamideena

And that declaration of theirs did not cease until We made them [as] a harvest [mowed down], extinguished [like a fire].

  16. 21:16Read in the mushaf ↗

Wama khalaqna alssamaa waalarda wama baynahuma laʿibeena

And We did not create the heaven and earth and that between them in play.

  17. 21:17Read in the mushaf ↗

Law aradna an nattakhitha lahwan laittakhathnahu min ladunna in kunna faʿileena

Had We intended to take a diversion, We could have taken it from [what is] with Us - if [indeed] We were to do so.

  18. 21:18Read in the mushaf ↗

Bal naqthifu bialhaqqi ʿala albatili fayadmaghuhu faitha huwa zahiqun walakumu alwaylu mimma tasifoona

Rather, We dash the truth upon falsehood, and it destroys it, and thereupon it departs. And for you is destruction from that which you describe.

  19. 21:19Read in the mushaf ↗

Walahu man fee alssamawati waalardi waman ʿindahu la yastakbiroona ʿan ʿibadatihi wala yastahsiroona

To Him belongs whoever is in the heavens and the earth. And those near Him [i.e., the angels] are not prevented by arrogance from His worship, nor do they tire.

  20. 21:20Read in the mushaf ↗

    Yusabbihoona allayla waalnnahara la yafturoona

They exalt [Him] night and day [and] do not slacken.

  21. 21:21Read in the mushaf ↗

Ami ittakhathoo alihatan mina alardi hum yunshiroona

Or have they [i.e., men] taken for themselves gods from the earth who resurrect [the dead]?

  22. 21:22Read in the mushaf ↗

Law kana feehima alihatun illa Allahu lafasadata fasubhana Allahi rabbi alʿarshi ʿamma yasifoona

Had there been within them [i.e., the heavens and earth] gods besides Allāh, they both would have been ruined. So exalted is Allāh, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe.

  23. 21:23Read in the mushaf ↗

La yusalu ʿamma yafʿalu wahum yusaloona

He is not questioned about what He does, but they will be questioned.

  24. 21:24Read in the mushaf ↗

Ami ittakhathoo min doonihi alihatan qul hatoo burhanakum hatha thikru man maʿiya wathikru man qablee bal aktharuhum la yaʿlamoona alhaqqa fahum muʿridoona

Or have they taken gods besides Him? Say, [O Muḥammad], "Produce your proof. This [Qur’ān] is the message for those with me and the message of those before me." But most of them do not know the truth, so they are turning away.

  25. 21:25Read in the mushaf ↗

Wama arsalna min qablika min rasoolin illa noohee ilayhi annahu la ilaha illa ana faoʿbudooni

And We sent not before you any messenger except We revealed to him that, "There is no deity except Me, so worship Me."

  26. 21:26Read in the mushaf ↗

Waqaloo ittakhatha alrrahmanu waladan subhanahu bal ʿibadun mukramoona

And they say, "The Most Merciful has taken a son." Exalted is He! Rather, they are [but] honored servants.

  27. 21:27Read in the mushaf ↗

La yasbiqoonahu bialqawli wahum biamrihi yaʿmaloona

They cannot precede Him in word, and they act by His command.

  28. 21:28Read in the mushaf ↗

Yaʿlamu ma bayna aydeehim wama khalfahum wala yashfaʿoona illa limani irtada wahum min khashyatihi mushfiqoona

He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they cannot intercede except on behalf of one whom He approves. And they, from fear of Him, are apprehensive.

  29. 21:29Read in the mushaf ↗

Waman yaqul minhum innee ilahun min doonihi fathalika najzeehi jahannama kathalika najzee alththalimeena

And whoever of them should say, "Indeed, I am a god besides Him" - that one We would recompense with Hell. Thus do We recompense the wrongdoers.

  30. 21:30Read in the mushaf ↗

Awalam yara allatheena kafaroo anna alssamawati waalarda kanata ratqan fafataqnahuma wajaʿalna mina almai kulla shayin hayyin afala yuminoona

Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and then We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?

  31. 21:31Read in the mushaf ↗

Wajaʿalna fee alardi rawasiya an tameeda bihim wajaʿalna feeha fijajan subulan laʿallahum yahtadoona

And We placed within the earth firmly set mountains, lest it should shift with them, and We made therein [mountain] passes [as] roads that they might be guided.

  32. 21:32Read in the mushaf ↗

Wajaʿalna alssamaa saqfan mahfoothan wahum ʿan ayatiha muʿridoona

And We made the sky a protected ceiling, but they, from its signs, are turning away.

  33. 21:33Read in the mushaf ↗

Wahuwa allathee khalaqa allayla waalnnahara waalshshamsa waalqamara kullun fee falakin yasbahoona

And it is He who created the night and the day and the sun and the moon; all [heavenly bodies] in an orbit are swimming.

  34. 21:34Read in the mushaf ↗

Wama jaʿalna libasharin min qablika alkhulda afain mitta fahumu alkhalidoona

And We did not grant to any man before you eternity [on earth]; so if you die - would they be eternal?

  35. 21:35Read in the mushaf ↗

Kullu nafsin thaiqatu almawti wanablookum bialshsharri waalkhayri fitnatan wailayna turjaʿoona

Every soul will taste death. And We test you with evil and with good as trial; and to Us you will be returned.

  36. 21:36Read in the mushaf ↗

Waitha raaka allatheena kafaroo in yattakhithoonaka illa huzuwan ahatha allathee yathkuru alihatakum wahum bithikri alrrahmani hum kafiroona

And when those who disbelieve see you, [O Muḥammad], they take you not except in ridicule, [saying], "Is this the one who mentions [i.e., insults] your gods?" And they are, at the mention of the Most Merciful, disbelievers.

  37. 21:37Read in the mushaf ↗

Khuliqa alinsanu min ʿajalin saoreekum ayatee fala tastaʿjiloona

Man was created of haste [i.e., impatience]. I will show you My signs [i.e., vengeance], so do not impatiently urge Me.

  38. 21:38Read in the mushaf ↗

Wayaqooloona mata hatha alwaʿdu in kuntum sadiqeena

And they say, "When is this promise, if you should be truthful?"

  39. 21:39Read in the mushaf ↗

Law yaʿlamu allatheena kafaroo heena la yakuffoona ʿan wujoohihimu alnnara wala ʿan thuhoorihim wala hum yunsaroona

If those who disbelieved but knew the time when they will not avert the Fire from their faces or from their backs and they will not be aided...

  40. 21:40Read in the mushaf ↗

Bal tateehim baghtatan fatabhatuhum fala yastateeʿoona raddaha wala hum yuntharoona

Rather, it will come to them unexpectedly and bewilder them, and they will not be able to repel it, nor will they be reprieved.

  41. 21:41Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaqadi istuhzia birusulin min qablika fahaqa biallatheena sakhiroo minhum ma kanoo bihi yastahzioona

And already were messengers ridiculed before you, but those who mocked them were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.

  42. 21:42Read in the mushaf ↗

Qul man yaklaokum biallayli waalnnahari mina alrrahmani bal hum ʿan thikri rabbihim muʿridoona

Say, "Who can protect you at night or by day from the Most Merciful?" But they are, from the remembrance of their Lord, turning away.

  43. 21:43Read in the mushaf ↗

Am lahum alihatun tamnaʿuhum min doonina la yastateeʿoona nasra anfusihim wala hum minna yushaboona

Or do they have gods to defend them other than Us? They are unable [even] to help themselves, nor can they be protected from Us.

  44. 21:44Read in the mushaf ↗

Bal mattaʿna haolai waabaahum hatta tala ʿalayhimu alʿumuru afala yarawna anna natee alarda nanqusuha min atrafiha afahumu alghaliboona

But, [on the contrary], We have provided good things for these [disbelievers] and their fathers until life was prolonged for them. Then do they not see that We set upon the land, reducing it from its borders? Is it they who will overcome?

  45. 21:45Read in the mushaf ↗

Qul innama onthirukum bialwahyi wala yasmaʿu alssummu aldduʿaa itha ma yuntharoona

Say, "I only warn you by revelation." But the deaf do not hear the call when they are warned.

  46. 21:46Read in the mushaf ↗

Walain massathum nafhatun min ʿathabi rabbika layaqoolunna ya waylana inna kunna thalimeena

Waharamun ʿala qaryatin ahlaknaha annahum la yarjiʿoona

And it is prohibited to [the people of] a city which We have destroyed that they will [ever] return

  96. 21:96Read in the mushaf ↗

Hatta itha futihat yajooju wamajooju wahum min kulli hadabin yansiloona

Until when [the dam of] Gog and Magog has been opened and they, from every elevation, descend

  97. 21:97Read in the mushaf ↗

Waiqtaraba alwaʿdu alhaqqu faitha hiya shakhisatun absaru allatheena kafaroo ya waylana qad kunna fee ghaflatin min hatha bal kunna thalimeena

And [when] the true promise [i.e., the resurrection] has approached; then suddenly the eyes of those who disbelieved will be staring [in horror, while they say], "O woe to us; we had been unmindful of this; rather, we were wrongdoers."

  98. 21:98Read in the mushaf ↗

Innakum wama taʿbudoona min dooni Allahi hasabu jahannama antum laha waridoona

Indeed, you [disbelievers] and what you worship other than Allāh are the firewood of Hell. You will be coming to [enter] it.

  99. 21:99Read in the mushaf ↗

Law kana haolai alihatan ma waradooha wakullun feeha khalidoona

Had these [false deities] been [actual] gods, they would not have come to it, but all are eternal therein.

  100. 21:100Read in the mushaf ↗

Lahum feeha zafeerun wahum feeha la yasmaʿoona

For them therein is heavy sighing, and they therein will not hear.

  101. 21:101Read in the mushaf ↗

Inna allatheena sabaqat lahum minna alhusna olaika ʿanha mubʿadoona

Indeed, those for whom the best [reward] has preceded from Us - they are from it far removed.

  102. 21:102Read in the mushaf ↗

They will not hear its sound, while they are, in that which their souls desire, abiding eternally.

  103. 21:103Read in the mushaf ↗

La yahzunuhumu alfazaʿu alakbaru watatalaqqahumu almalaikatu hatha yawmukumu allathee kuntum tooʿadoona

They will not be grieved by the greatest terror, and the angels will meet them, [saying], "This is your Day which you have been promised" -

  104. 21:104Read in the mushaf ↗

Yawma natwee alssamaa katayyi alssijlli lilkutubi kama badana awwala khalqin nuʿeeduhu waʿdan ʿalayna inna kunna faʿileena

The Day when We will fold the heaven like the folding of a [written] sheet for the records. As We began the first creation, We will repeat it. [That is] a promise binding upon Us. Indeed, We will do it.

  105. 21:105Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaqad katabna fee alzzaboori min baʿdi alththikri anna alarda yarithuha ʿibadiya alssalihoona

And We have already written in the book [of Psalms] after the [previous] mention that the land [of Paradise] is inherited by My righteous servants.

  106. 21:106Read in the mushaf ↗

Inna fee hatha labalaghan liqawmin ʿabideena

Indeed, in this [Qur’ān] is notification for a worshipping people.

  107. 21:107Read in the mushaf ↗

    Wama arsalnaka illa rahmatan lilʿalameena

And We have not sent you, [O Muḥammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.

  108. 21:108Read in the mushaf ↗

Qul innama yooha ilayya annama ilahukum ilahun wahidun fahal antum muslimoona

Say, "It is only revealed to me that your god is but one God; so will you be Muslims [in submission to Him]?"

  109. 21:109Read in the mushaf ↗

Fain tawallaw faqul athantukum ʿala sawain wain adree aqareebun am baʿeedun ma tooʿadoona

But if they turn away, then say, "I have announced to [all of] you equally. And I know not whether near or far is that which you are promised.

  110. 21:110Read in the mushaf ↗

Innahu yaʿlamu aljahra mina alqawli wayaʿlamu ma taktumoona

Indeed, He knows what is declared of speech, and He knows what you conceal.

And I know not; perhaps it is a trial for you and enjoyment for a time."

  112. 21:112Read in the mushaf ↗

Qala rabbi ohkum bialhaqqi warabbuna alrrahmanu almustaʿanu ʿala ma tasifoona

[The Prophet (ﷺ)] has said, "My Lord, judge [between us] in truth. And our Lord is the Most Merciful, the one whose help is sought against that which you describe."

About this surah

Name

The name of this Surah has not been taken from any verse but it has been called Al-Anbiyaa because it contains a continuous account of many Anbiyaa (Prophets). Nevertheless, it is a symbolic name and not a title.

Period of Revelation

Both the subject matter and the style of the Surah indicate that it was sent down in the third stage of the life of the Holy Prophet at Makkah.(Sea Introduction to Chapter VI).

Subject and Topics

This Surah discusses the conflict between the Holy Prophet and the chiefs of Makkah, which was rampant at the time of its Revelation and answers those objections and doubts which were being put forward concerning his Prophethood and the Doctrines of Tauhid and the Hereafter. The chiefs of Makkah have also been rebuked for their treachery against the Holy Prophet and warned of the evil consequences of their wicked ways. They have been admonished to give up their indifference and heedlessness that they were showing about the Message. At the end of the Surah, they have been told that the person whom they considered to be a "distress and affliction" had in reality come to them as a blessing.

Main Themes

In vv. 1-47, the following themes have been discussed in particular :

  1. The objection of the disbelievers that a human being could not be a Messenger and therefore they could not accept Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a Prophet, has been refuted.
  2. They have been taken to task for raising multifarious and contradictory objections against the Holy Prophet and the Qur'an.
  3. Their wrong conception of life has been proved to be false because it was responsible for their indifferent and heedless attitude towards the Message of the Holy Prophet. They believed that life was merely a sport and pastime and had no purpose behind or before it and there was no accountability or reward or punishment.
  4. The main cause of the conflict between the disbelievers and the Holy Prophet was their insistence on the doctrine of shirk and antagonism to the Doctrine of Tauhid. So the doctrine of shirk has been refuted and the Doctrine of Tauhid reinforced by weighty and impressive though brief arguments.
  5. Arguments and admonitions have been used to remove another misunderstanding of theirs. They presumed that Muhammad (peace be upon him) was a false prophet and his warnings of a scourge from God were empty threats, just because no scourge was visiting them in spite of their persistent rejection of the Prophet.

In vv. 48-91, examples have been cited from the important events of the life stories of the Prophets to show that all the Prophets, who were sent by God, were human beings and had all the characteristics of a man except those which were exclusive to Prophethood. They had no share in Godhead and they had to implore Allah to fulfill each and every necessity of theirs.

Along with these two other things have also been mentioned:

  1. All the Prophets had to pass through distress and affliction; their opponents did their worst to thwart their mission, but in spite of it they came out successful by the extraordinary succor from Allah.
  2. All the Prophets had one and the same "way of life', the same as was being presented by Muhammad (Allah's peace be upon him), and that was the only Right Way of Life and all other ways invented and introduced by mischievous people were utterly wrong.

In vv. 92-106, it has been declared that only those who follow the Right Way, will come out successful in the final judgment of God and those who discard it shall meet with the worst consequences.

In vv. 107-112, the people have been told that it is a great favor of Allah that He has sent His Messenger to inform them beforehand of this Reality and that those, who consider his coming to be an affliction instead of a blessing, are foolish people.
