  1. 22:1Read in the mushaf ↗

Ya ayyuha alnnasu ittaqoo rabbakum inna zalzalata alssaʿati shayon ʿatheemun

O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the [final] Hour is a terrible thing.

  2. 22:2Read in the mushaf ↗

Yawma tarawnaha tathhalu kullu murdiʿatin ʿamma ardaʿat watadaʿu kullu thati hamlin hamlaha watara alnnasa sukara wama hum bisukara walakinna ʿathaba Allahi shadeedun

On the Day you see it every nursing mother will be distracted from that [child] she was nursing, and every pregnant woman will abort her pregnancy, and you will see the people [appearing] intoxicated while they are not intoxicated; but the punishment of Allāh is severe.

  3. 22:3Read in the mushaf ↗

Wamina alnnasi man yujadilu fee Allahi bighayri ʿilmin wayattabiʿu kulla shaytanin mareedin

And of the people is he who disputes about Allāh without knowledge and follows every rebellious devil.

  4. 22:4Read in the mushaf ↗

Kutiba ʿalayhi annahu man tawallahu faannahu yudilluhu wayahdeehi ila ʿathabi alssaʿeeri

It has been decreed for him [i.e., every devil] that whoever turns to him - he will misguide him and will lead him to the punishment of the Blaze.

  5. 22:5Read in the mushaf ↗

Ya ayyuha alnnasu in kuntum fee raybin mina albaʿthi fainna khalaqnakum min turabin thumma min nutfatin thumma min ʿalaqatin thumma min mudghatin mukhallaqatin waghayri mukhallaqatin linubayyina lakum wanuqirru fee alarhami ma nashao ila ajalin musamman thumma nukhrijukum tiflan thumma litablughoo ashuddakum waminkum man yutawaffa waminkum man yuraddu ila arthali alʿumuri likayla yaʿlama min baʿdi ʿilmin shayan watara alarda hamidatan faitha anzalna ʿalayha almaa ihtazzat warabat waanbatat min kulli zawjin baheejin

O people, if you should be in doubt about the Resurrection, then [consider that] indeed, We created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot, and then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed - that We may show you. And We settle in the wombs whom We will for a specified term, then We bring you out as a child, and then [We develop you] that you may reach your [time of] maturity. And among you is he who is taken in [early] death, and among you is he who is returned to the most decrepit [old] age so that he knows, after [once having] knowledge, nothing. And you see the earth barren, but when We send down upon it rain, it quivers and swells and grows [something] of every beautiful kind.

  6. 22:6Read in the mushaf ↗

Thalika bianna Allaha huwa alhaqqu waannahu yuhyee almawta waannahu ʿala kulli shayin qadeerun

That is because Allāh is the True Reality and because He gives life to the dead and because He is over all things competent

  7. 22:7Read in the mushaf ↗

Waanna alssaʿata atiyatun la rayba feeha waanna Allaha yabʿathu man fee alquboori

And [that they may know] that the Hour is coming - no doubt about it - and that Allāh will resurrect those in the graves.

  8. 22:8Read in the mushaf ↗

Wamina alnnasi man yujadilu fee Allahi bighayri ʿilmin wala hudan wala kitabin muneerin

And of the people is he who disputes about Allāh without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening book [from Him],

  9. 22:9Read in the mushaf ↗

Thaniya ʿitfihi liyudilla ʿan sabeeli Allahi lahu fee alddunya khizyun wanutheequhu yawma alqiyamati ʿathaba alhareeqi

Twisting his neck [in arrogance] to mislead [people] from the way of Allāh. For him in the world is disgrace, and We will make him taste on the Day of Resurrection the punishment of the Burning Fire [while it is said],

  10. 22:10Read in the mushaf ↗

Thalika bima qaddamat yadaka waanna Allaha laysa bithallamin lilʿabeedi

"That is for what your hands have put forth and because Allāh is not ever unjust to [His] servants."

  11. 22:11Read in the mushaf ↗

Wamina alnnasi man yaʿbudu Allaha ʿala harfin fain asabahu khayrun itmaanna bihi wain asabathu fitnatun inqalaba ʿala wajhihi khasira alddunya waalakhirata thalika huwa alkhusranu almubeenu

And of the people is he who worships Allāh on an edge. If he is touched by good, he is reassured by it; but if he is struck by trial, he turns on his face [to unbelief]. He has lost [this] world and the Hereafter. That is what is the manifest loss.

  12. 22:12Read in the mushaf ↗

He invokes instead of Allāh that which neither harms him nor benefits him. That is what is the extreme error.

  13. 22:13Read in the mushaf ↗

Yadʿoo laman darruhu aqrabu min nafʿihi labisa almawla walabisa alʿasheeru

He invokes one whose harm is closer than his benefit - how wretched the protector and how wretched the associate.

  14. 22:14Read in the mushaf ↗

Inna Allaha yudkhilu allatheena amanoo waʿamiloo alssalihati jannatin tajree min tahtiha alanharu inna Allaha yafʿalu ma yureedu

Indeed, Allāh will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow. Indeed, Allāh does what He intends.

  15. 22:15Read in the mushaf ↗

Man kana yathunnu an lan yansurahu Allahu fee alddunya waalakhirati falyamdud bisababin ila alssamai thumma liyaqtaʿ falyanthur hal yuthhibanna kayduhu ma yagheethu

Whoever should think that Allāh will not support him [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] in this world and the Hereafter - let him extend a rope to the ceiling, then cut off [his breath], and let him see: will his effort remove that which enrages [him]?

  16. 22:16Read in the mushaf ↗

Wakathalika anzalnahu ayatin bayyinatin waanna Allaha yahdee man yureedu

And thus have We sent it [i.e., the Qur’ān] down as verses of clear evidence and because Allāh guides whom He intends.

  17. 22:17Read in the mushaf ↗

Inna allatheena amanoo waallatheena hadoo waalssabieena waalnnasara waalmajoosa waallatheena ashrakoo inna Allaha yafsilu baynahum yawma alqiyamati inna Allaha ʿala kulli shayin shaheedun

Indeed, those who have believed and those who were Jews and the Sabeans and the Christians and the Magians and those who associated with Allāh - Allāh will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed Allāh is, over all things, Witness.

  18. 22:18Read in the mushaf ↗

Alam tara anna Allaha yasjudu lahu man fee alssamawati waman fee alardi waalshshamsu waalqamaru waalnnujoomu waaljibalu waalshshajaru waalddawabbu wakatheerun mina alnnasi wakatheerun haqqa ʿalayhi alʿathabu waman yuhini Allahu fama lahu min mukrimin inna Allaha yafʿalu ma yashao

Do you not see [i.e., know] that to Allāh prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and many of the people? But upon many the punishment has been justified. And he whom Allāh humiliates - for him there is no bestower of honor. Indeed, Allāh does what He wills.

  19. 22:19Read in the mushaf ↗

Hathani khasmani ikhtasamoo fee rabbihim faallatheena kafaroo quttiʿat lahum thiyabun min narin yusabbu min fawqi ruoosihimu alhameemu

These are two adversaries who have disputed over their Lord. But those who disbelieved will have cut out for them garments of fire. Poured upon their heads will be scalding water

  20. 22:20Read in the mushaf ↗

Yusharu bihi ma fee butoonihim waaljuloodu

By which is melted that within their bellies and [their] skins.

  21. 22:21Read in the mushaf ↗

    Walahum maqamiʿu min hadeedin

And for [striking] them are maces of iron.

  22. 22:22Read in the mushaf ↗

Kullama aradoo an yakhrujoo minha min ghammin oʿeedoo feeha wathooqoo ʿathaba alhareeqi

Every time they want to get out of it [i.e., Hellfire] from anguish, they will be returned to it, and [it will be said], "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire!"

  23. 22:23Read in the mushaf ↗

Inna Allaha yudkhilu allatheena amanoo waʿamiloo alssalihati jannatin tajree min tahtiha alanharu yuhallawna feeha min asawira min thahabin waluluan walibasuhum feeha hareerun

Indeed, Allāh will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their garments therein will be silk.

  24. 22:24Read in the mushaf ↗

Wahudoo ila alttayyibi mina alqawli wahudoo ila sirati alhameedi

And they had been guided [in worldly life] to good speech, and they were guided to the path of the Praiseworthy.

  25. 22:25Read in the mushaf ↗

Inna allatheena kafaroo wayasuddoona ʿan sabeeli Allahi waalmasjidi alharami allathee jaʿalnahu lilnnasi sawaan alʿakifu feehi waalbadi waman yurid feehi biilhadin bithulmin nuthiqhu min ʿathabin aleemin

Indeed, those who have disbelieved and avert [people] from the way of Allāh and [from] al-Masjid al-Ḥarām, which We made for the people - equal are the resident therein and one from outside - and [also] whoever intends [a deed] therein of deviation [in religion] by wrongdoing - We will make him taste of a painful punishment.

  26. 22:26Read in the mushaf ↗

Waith bawwana liibraheema makana albayti an la tushrik bee shayan watahhir baytiya lilttaifeena waalqaimeena waalrrukkaʿi alssujoodi

And [mention, O Muḥammad], when We designated for Abraham the site of the House, [saying], "Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who perform ṭawāf and those who stand [in prayer] and those who bow and prostrate.

  27. 22:27Read in the mushaf ↗

Waaththin fee alnnasi bialhajji yatooka rijalan waʿala kulli damirin yateena min kulli fajjin ʿameeqin

And proclaim to the people the ḥajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass -

  28. 22:28Read in the mushaf ↗

Liyashhadoo manafiʿa lahum wayathkuroo isma Allahi fee ayyamin maʿloomatin ʿala ma razaqahum min baheemati alanʿami fakuloo minha waatʿimoo albaisa alfaqeera

That they may witness [i.e., attend] benefits for themselves and mention the name of Allāh on known [i.e., specific] days over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals. So eat of them and feed the miserable and poor.

  29. 22:29Read in the mushaf ↗

Thumma lyaqdoo tafathahum walyoofoo nuthoorahum walyattawwafoo bialbayti alʿateeqi

Then let them end their untidiness and fulfill their vows and perform ṭawāf around the ancient House."

  30. 22:30Read in the mushaf ↗

Thalika waman yuʿaththim hurumati Allahi fahuwa khayrun lahu ʿinda rabbihi waohillat lakumu alanʿamu illa ma yutla ʿalaykum faijtaniboo alrrijsa mina alawthani waijtaniboo qawla alzzoori

That [has been commanded], and whoever honors the sacred ordinances of Allāh - it is best for him in the sight of his Lord. And permitted to you are the grazing livestock, except what is recited to you. So avoid the uncleanliness of idols and avoid false statement,

  31. 22:31Read in the mushaf ↗

Hunafaa lillahi ghayra mushrikeena bihi waman yushrik biAllahi fakaannama kharra mina alssamai fatakhtafuhu alttayru aw tahwee bihi alrreehu fee makanin saheeqin

Inclining [only] to Allāh, not associating [anything] with Him. And he who associates with Allāh - it is as though he had fallen from the sky and was snatched by the birds or the wind carried him down into a remote place.

  32. 22:32Read in the mushaf ↗

Thalika waman yuʿaththim shaʿaira Allahi fainnaha min taqwa alquloobi

That [is so]. And whoever honors the symbols [i.e., rites] of Allāh - indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.

  33. 22:33Read in the mushaf ↗

Lakum feeha manafiʿu ila ajalin musamman thumma mahilluha ila albayti alʿateeqi

For you therein [i.e., the animals marked for sacrifice] are benefits for a specified term; then their place of sacrifice is at the ancient House.

  34. 22:34Read in the mushaf ↗

Walikulli ommatin jaʿalna mansakan liyathkuroo isma Allahi ʿala ma razaqahum min baheemati alanʿami failahukum ilahun wahidun falahu aslimoo wabashshiri almukhbiteena

And for every [religious] community We have appointed a rite [of sacrifice] that they may mention the name of Allāh over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals. For your god is one God, so to Him submit. And, [O Muḥammad], give good tidings to the humble [before their Lord]

  35. 22:35Read in the mushaf ↗

Allatheena itha thukira Allahu wajilat quloobuhum waalssabireena ʿala ma asabahum waalmuqeemee alssalati wamimma razaqnahum yunfiqoona

Who, when Allāh is mentioned, their hearts are fearful, and [to] the patient over what has afflicted them, and the establishers of prayer and those who spend from what We have provided them.

  36. 22:36Read in the mushaf ↗

Waalbudna jaʿalnaha lakum min shaʿairi Allahi lakum feeha khayrun faothkuroo isma Allahi ʿalayha sawaffa faitha wajabat junoobuha fakuloo minha waatʿimoo alqaniʿa waalmuʿtarra kathalika sakhkharnaha lakum laʿallakum tashkuroona

And the camels and cattle We have appointed for you as among the symbols [i.e., rites] of Allāh; for you therein is good. So mention the name of Allāh upon them when lined up [for sacrifice]; and when they are [lifeless] on their sides, then eat from them and feed the needy [who does not seek aid] and the beggar. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may be grateful.

  37. 22:37Read in the mushaf ↗

Lan yanala Allaha luhoomuha wala dimaoha walakin yanaluhu alttaqwa minkum kathalika sakhkharaha lakum litukabbiroo Allaha ʿala ma hadakum wabashshiri almuhsineena

Their meat will not reach Allāh, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may glorify Allāh for that [to] which He has guided you; and give good tidings to the doers of good.

  38. 22:38Read in the mushaf ↗

Inna Allaha yudafiʿu ʿani allatheena amanoo inna Allaha la yuhibbu kulla khawwanin kafoorin

Indeed, Allāh defends those who have believed. Indeed, Allāh does not like everyone treacherous and ungrateful.

  39. 22:39Read in the mushaf ↗

Othina lillatheena yuqataloona biannahum thulimoo wainna Allaha ʿala nasrihim laqadeerun

Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allāh is competent to give them victory.

  40. 22:40Read in the mushaf ↗

Allatheena okhrijoo min diyarihim bighayri haqqin illa an yaqooloo rabbuna Allahu walawla dafʿu Allahi alnnasa baʿdahum bibaʿdin lahuddimat sawamiʿu wabiyaʿun wasalawatun wamasajidu yuthkaru feeha ismu Allahi katheeran walayansuranna Allahu man yansuruhu inna Allaha laqawiyyun ʿazeezun

[They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without right - only because they say, "Our Lord is Allāh." And were it not that Allāh checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of Allāh is much mentioned [i.e., praised]. And Allāh will surely support those who support Him [i.e., His cause]. Indeed, Allāh is Powerful and Exalted in Might.

  41. 22:41Read in the mushaf ↗

Allatheena in makkannahum fee alardi aqamoo alssalata waatawoo alzzakata waamaroo bialmaʿroofi wanahaw ʿani almunkari walillahi ʿaqibatu alomoori

[And they are] those who, if We give them authority in the land, establish prayer and give zakāh and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. And to Allāh belongs the outcome of [all] matters.

  42. 22:42Read in the mushaf ↗

Wain yukaththibooka faqad kaththabat qablahum qawmu noohin waʿadun wathamoodu

And if they deny you, [O Muḥammad] - so, before them, did the people of Noah and ʿAad and Thamūd deny [their prophets],

  43. 22:43Read in the mushaf ↗

    Waqawmu ibraheema waqawmu lootin

And the people of Abraham and the people of Lot

  44. 22:44Read in the mushaf ↗

Waashabu madyana wakuththiba moosa faamlaytu lilkafireena thumma akhathtuhum fakayfa kana nakeeri

And the inhabitants of Madyan. And Moses was denied, so I prolonged enjoyment for the disbelievers; then I seized them, and how [terrible] was My reproach.

  45. 22:45Read in the mushaf ↗

Fakaayyin min qaryatin ahlaknaha wahiya thalimatun fahiya khawiyatun ʿala ʿurooshiha wabirin muʿattalatin waqasrin masheedin

And how many a city did We destroy while it was committing wrong - so it is [now] fallen into ruin - and [how many] an abandoned well and [how many] a lofty palace.

  46. 22:46Read in the mushaf ↗

Afalam yaseeroo fee alardi fatakoona lahum quloobun yaʿqiloona biha aw athanun yasmaʿoona biha fainnaha la taʿma alabsaru walakin taʿma alquloobu allatee fee alssudoori

So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.

  47. 22:47Read in the mushaf ↗

Wayastaʿjiloonaka bialʿathabi walan yukhlifa Allahu waʿdahu wainna yawman ʿinda rabbika kaalfi sanatin mimma taʿuddoona

And they urge you to hasten the punishment. But Allāh will never fail in His promise. And indeed, a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of those which you count.

  48. 22:48Read in the mushaf ↗

Wakaayyin min qaryatin amlaytu laha wahiya thalimatun thumma akhathtuha wailayya almaseeru

And for how many a city did I prolong enjoyment while it was committing wrong. Then I seized it, and to Me is the [final] destination.

  49. 22:49Read in the mushaf ↗

Qul ya ayyuha alnnasu innama ana lakum natheerun mubeenun

Say, "O people, I am only to you a clear warner."

  50. 22:50Read in the mushaf ↗

Faallatheena amanoo waʿamiloo alssalihati lahum maghfiratun warizqun kareemun

And those who have believed and done righteous deeds - for them is forgiveness and noble provision.

  51. 22:51Read in the mushaf ↗

Waallatheena saʿaw fee ayatina muʿajizeena olaika ashabu aljaheemi

But the ones who strove against Our verses, [seeking] to cause failure - those are the companions of Hellfire.

  52. 22:52Read in the mushaf ↗

Wama arsalna min qablika min rasoolin wala nabiyyin illa itha tamanna alqa alshshaytanu fee omniyyatihi fayansakhu Allahu ma yulqee alshshaytanu thumma yuhkimu Allahu ayatihi waAllahu ʿaleemun hakeemun

And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he spoke [or recited], Satan threw into it [some misunderstanding]. But Allāh abolishes that which Satan throws in; then Allāh makes precise His verses. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.

  53. 22:53Read in the mushaf ↗

Liyajʿala ma yulqee alshshaytanu fitnatan lillatheena fee quloobihim maradun waalqasiyati quloobuhum wainna alththalimeena lafee shiqaqin baʿeedin

[That is] so He may make what Satan throws in [i.e., asserts] a trial for those within whose hearts is disease and those hard of heart. And indeed, the wrongdoers are in extreme dissension.

  54. 22:54Read in the mushaf ↗

Waliyaʿlama allatheena ootoo alʿilma annahu alhaqqu min rabbika fayuminoo bihi fatukhbita lahu quloobuhum wainna Allaha lahadi allatheena amanoo ila siratin mustaqeemin

And so those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and [therefore] believe in it, and their hearts humbly submit to it. And indeed is Allāh the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path.

  55. 22:55Read in the mushaf ↗

Wala yazalu allatheena kafaroo fee miryatin minhu hatta tatiyahumu alssaʿatu baghtatan aw yatiyahum ʿathabu yawmin ʿaqeemin

But those who disbelieve will not cease to be in doubt of it until the Hour comes upon them unexpectedly or there comes to them the punishment of a barren Day.

  56. 22:56Read in the mushaf ↗

Almulku yawmaithin lillahi yahkumu baynahum faallatheena amanoo waʿamiloo alssalihati fee jannati alnnaʿeemi

[All] sovereignty that Day is for Allāh; He will judge between them. So they who believed and did righteous deeds will be in the Gardens of Pleasure.

  57. 22:57Read in the mushaf ↗

Waallatheena kafaroo wakaththaboo biayatina faolaika lahum ʿathabun muheenun

And they who disbelieved and denied Our signs - for those there will be a humiliating punishment.

  58. 22:58Read in the mushaf ↗

Waallatheena hajaroo fee sabeeli Allahi thumma qutiloo aw matoo layarzuqannahumu Allahu rizqan hasanan wainna Allaha lahuwa khayru alrraziqeena

And those who emigrated for the cause of Allāh and then were killed or died - Allāh will surely provide for them a good provision. And indeed, it is Allāh who is the best of providers.

  59. 22:59Read in the mushaf ↗

Layudkhilannahum mudkhalan yardawnahu wainna Allaha laʿaleemun haleemun

He will surely cause them to enter an entrance with which they will be pleased, and indeed, Allāh is Knowing and Forbearing.

  60. 22:60Read in the mushaf ↗

Thalika waman ʿaqaba bimithli ma ʿooqiba bihi thumma bughiya ʿalayhi layansurannahu Allahu inna Allaha laʿafuwwun ghafoorun

That [is so]. And whoever responds [to injustice] with the equivalent of that with which he was harmed and then is tyrannized - Allāh will surely aid him. Indeed, Allāh is Pardoning and Forgiving.

  61. 22:61Read in the mushaf ↗

Thalika bianna Allaha yooliju allayla fee alnnahari wayooliju alnnahara fee allayli waanna Allaha sameeʿun baseerun

That is because Allāh causes the night to enter the day and causes the day to enter the night and because Allāh is Hearing and Seeing.

  62. 22:62Read in the mushaf ↗

Thalika bianna Allaha huwa alhaqqu waanna ma yadʿoona min doonihi huwa albatilu waanna Allaha huwa alʿaliyyu alkabeeru

That is because Allāh is the True Reality, and that which they call upon other than Him is falsehood, and because Allāh is the Most High, the Grand.

  63. 22:63Read in the mushaf ↗

Alam tara anna Allaha anzala mina alssamai maan fatusbihu alardu mukhdarratan inna Allaha lateefun khabeerun

Do you not see that Allāh has sent down rain from the sky and the earth becomes green? Indeed, Allāh is Subtle and Aware.

Lahu ma fee alssamawati wama fee alardi wainna Allaha lahuwa alghaniyyu alhameedu

Alam tara anna Allaha sakhkhara lakum ma fee alardi waalfulka tajree fee albahri biamrihi wayumsiku alssamaa an taqaʿa ʿala alardi illa biithnihi inna Allaha bialnnasi laraoofun raheemun

Do you not see that Allāh has subjected to you whatever is on the earth and the ships which run through the sea by His command? And He restrains the sky from falling upon the earth, unless by His permission. Indeed Allāh, to the people, is Kind and Merciful.

  66. 22:66Read in the mushaf ↗

Wahuwa allathee ahyakum thumma yumeetukum thumma yuhyeekum inna alinsana lakafoorun

And He is the one who gave you life; then He causes you to die and then will [again] give you life. Indeed, mankind is ungrateful.

  67. 22:67Read in the mushaf ↗

Likulli ommatin jaʿalna mansakan hum nasikoohu fala yunaziʿunnaka fee alamri waodʿu ila rabbika innaka laʿala hudan mustaqeemin

For every [religious] community We have appointed rites which they perform. So, [O Muḥammad], let them [i.e., the disbelievers] not contend with you over the matter but invite [them] to your Lord. Indeed, you are upon straight guidance.

  68. 22:68Read in the mushaf ↗

Alam taʿlam anna Allaha yaʿlamu ma fee alssamai waalardi inna thalika fee kitabin inna thalika ʿala Allahi yaseerun

Do you not know that Allāh knows what is in the heaven and earth? Indeed, that is in a Record. Indeed that, for Allāh, is easy.

And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, you recognize in the faces of those who disbelieve disapproval. They are almost on the verge of assaulting those who recite to them Our verses. Say, "Then shall I inform you of [what is] worse than that? And strive for Allāh with the striving due to Him. He has chosen you and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty. [It is] the religion of your father, Abraham. He [i.e., Allāh] named you "Muslims" before [in former scriptures] and in this [revelation] that the Messenger may be a witness over you and you may be witnesses over the people. So establish prayer and give zakāh and hold fast to Allāh. He is your protector; and excellent is the protector, and excellent is the helper.

About this surah

xName

This Surah takes its name from v. 27.

Period of Revelation

As this Surah contains the characteristics of both the Makki and the Madani Surahs, the commentators have differed as to its period of revelation, but in the light of its style and themes we are of the opinion that a part of it (vv. 1-24) was sent down in the last stage of the Makki life of the Holy Prophet a little before migration and the rest (vv. 25-78) during the first stage of his Madani life. That is why this Surah combines the characteristics of both the Makki and the Madani Surahs.

The sudden change of the style from v. 25 shows that probably vv. 25-78 were sent down in the month of Zul-Hijjah in the very first year after Hijrah. This is indicated by vv. 25-41 and confirmed by the occasion of the revelation of vv. 39-40. It appears that the month of Zul-Hijjah must have brought to the immigrants nostalgic memories of their homes in Makkah and naturally they must have thought of their Sacred City and of their Hajj congregation there, and grieved to think that the mushrik Quraish had debarred them from visiting the Sacred Mosque.

Therefore, they might even have been praying for and expecting Divine permission to wage war against those tyrants who had expelled them from their homes, and deprived them of visiting the House of Allah, and made it difficult for them to follow the way of Islam. It was at this juncture that these verses were revealed and the purpose for which Masjid-al- Haram was built.

It has been made plain that Hajj(pilgrimage) had been enjoined for the worship of One Allah, but ironically it had been dedicated to the rituals of shirk and the worshipers of One Allah debarred from it.

Therefore, permission for waging war against those tyrants has been given to oust them from Makkah and to establish the righteous way of life and eradicating evil. According to Ibn Abbas, Mujahid, Urwah bin Zubair, Zaid bin Aslam, Muqatil bin Hayyan, Qatadah and other great commentators, v. 39 is the first verse that grants the Muslims permission to wage war. Collections of Hadith and books on the life of the Holy Prophet confirm that after this permission actual preparations for war were started and the first expedition was sent to the coast of the Red Sea in Safar A.H. 2, which is known as the Expedition of Waddan or Al- Abwa.

Subject Matter and Theme

This Surah is addressed to: (1) The mushriks of Makkah, (2) the wavering Muslims, and (3) the True Believers. The mushriks have been warned in a forceful manner to this effect: "You have obdurately and impudently persisted in your ideas of ignorance and trusted in your deities instead of Allah, though they possess no power at all and you have repudiated the Divine Messenger. Now you will meet the same end as has been the doom of those like you before. You have only harmed yourselves by rejecting Our Prophet and by persecuting the best element of your own community; now your false deities shall not be able to save you from the wrath of God". At the same time, they have been admonished time and again for their creed of shirk and sound arguments have been given in favor of Tauhid and the Hereafter.

The wavering Muslims, who had embraced Islam but were not yet prepared to endure any hardship in its way, have been admonished to this effect: "What is this faith of yours? On the one hand, you are ready to believe in Allah and become His servants provided you are given peace and prosperity but, on the other, if you meet with afflictions and hardships in His Way, you discard your Allah and cease to remain His servant. You should bear in mind that this wavering attitude of yours cannot avert those misfortunes and losses which Allah has ordained for you."

As regards the true Believers, they have been addressed in two ways: (1) in a general way so as to include the common people of Arabia also, and (2) in an exclusive way:

  1. The Believers have been told that the mushriks of Makkah had no right to debar them from visiting the Holy Mosque. They had no right to prevent anyone from performing Hajj because the Holy Mosque was not their private property. This objection was not only justified but it also acted as an effective political weapon against the Quraish. For it posed this question to the other clans of Arabia: Were the Quraish mere attendants of the Holy Mosque or its owners? It implied that if they succeeded in debarring the Muslims from Hajj without any protest from others, they would feel encouraged in future to debar from Hajj and Umrah the people of any other clan, who happened to have strained relations with the Quraish. In order to emphasize this point, the history of the construction of the Holy Mosque has been cited to show that it was built by Prophet Abraham by the Command of Allah and he had invited all the peoples to perform Hajj there. That is why those coming from outside had enjoyed equal rights by the local people from the very beginning. It has also been made clear that that House had not been built for the rituals of shirk but for the worship of One Allah. Thus it was sheer tyranny that the worship of Allah was being forbidden there while the worship of idols enjoyed full license.
  2. In order to counteract the tyranny of the Quraish, the Muslims were allowed to fight with them. They were also given instructions to adopt the right and just attitude as and when they acquired power to rule in the land. Moreover, the Believers have been officially given the name of "Muslims", saying, "You are the real heirs to Abraham and you have been chosen to become witnesses of the Truth before mankind. Therefore you should establish salat and pay the zakat dues in order to become the best models of righteous life and perform Jihad for propagating the Word of Allah." (vv. 41, 77, 78.)

It will be worth while to keep in view the introductions to Chapters II (Al-Baqarah) and VIII (Al Anfal).
