  19. 23:19Read in the mushaf ↗

Washajaratan takhruju min toori saynaa tanbutu bialdduhni wasibghin lilakileena

And [We brought forth] a tree issuing from Mount Sinai which produces oil and food [i.e., olives] for those who eat.

  21. 23:21Read in the mushaf ↗

  23. 23:23Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaqad arsalna noohan ila qawmihi faqala ya qawmi oʿbudoo Allaha ma lakum min ilahin ghayruhu afala tattaqoona

And We had certainly sent Noah to his people, and he said, "O my people, worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?"

  24. 23:24Read in the mushaf ↗

Faqala almalao allatheena kafaroo min qawmihi ma hatha illa basharun mithlukum yureedu an yatafaddala ʿalaykum walaw shaa Allahu laanzala malaikatan ma samiʿna bihatha fee abaina alawwaleena

But the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, "This is not but a man like yourselves who wishes to take precedence over you; and if Allāh had willed [to send a messenger], He would have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our forefathers.

  25. 23:25Read in the mushaf ↗

In huwa illa rajulun bihi jinnatun fatarabbasoo bihi hatta heenin

He is not but a man possessed with madness, so wait concerning him for a time."

  26. 23:26Read in the mushaf ↗

    Qala rabbi onsurnee bima kaththabooni

[Noah] said, "My Lord, support me because they have denied me."

  27. 23:27Read in the mushaf ↗

Faawhayna ilayhi ani isnaʿi alfulka biaʿyunina wawahyina faitha jaa amruna wafara alttannooru faosluk feeha min kullin zawjayni ithnayni waahlaka illa man sabaqa ʿalayhi alqawlu minhum wala tukhatibnee fee allatheena thalamoo innahum mughraqoona

So We inspired to him, "Construct the ship under Our observation and Our inspiration, and when Our command comes and the oven overflows, put into it [i.e., the ship] from each [creature] two mates and your family, except him for whom the decree [of destruction] has proceeded. And do not address Me concerning those who have wronged; indeed, they are to be drowned.

  28. 23:28Read in the mushaf ↗

Faitha istawayta anta waman maʿaka ʿala alfulki faquli alhamdu lillahi allathee najjana mina alqawmi alththalimeena

And when you have boarded the ship, you and those with you, then say, 'Praise to Allāh who has saved us from the wrongdoing people.'

  29. 23:29Read in the mushaf ↗

Waqul rabbi anzilnee munzalan mubarakan waanta khayru almunzileena

And say, 'My Lord, let me land at a blessed landing place, and You are the best to accommodate [us].'"

  30. 23:30Read in the mushaf ↗

Indeed in that are signs, and indeed, We are ever testing [Our servants].

  31. 23:31Read in the mushaf ↗

Thumma anshana min baʿdihim qarnan akhareena

Then We produced after them a generation of others.

  32. 23:32Read in the mushaf ↗

Faarsalna feehim rasoolan minhum ani oʿbudoo Allaha ma lakum min ilahin ghayruhu afala tattaqoona

And We sent among them a messenger from themselves, [saying], "Worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?"

  33. 23:33Read in the mushaf ↗

Walain ataʿtum basharan mithlakum innakum ithan lakhasiroona

And if you should obey a man like yourselves, indeed, you would then be losers.

  35. 23:35Read in the mushaf ↗

Ayaʿidukum annakum itha mittum wakuntum turaban waʿithaman annakum mukhrajoona

Does he promise you that when you have died and become dust and bones that you will be brought forth [once more]?

In hiya illa hayatuna alddunya namootu wanahya wama nahnu bimabʿootheena

It [i.e., life] is not but our worldly life - we die and live, but we will not be resurrected.

  38. 23:38Read in the mushaf ↗

[Allāh] said, "After a little, they will surely become regretful."

  41. 23:41Read in the mushaf ↗

Faakhathathumu alssayhatu bialhaqqi fajaʿalnahum ghuthaan fabuʿdan lilqawmi alththalimeena

So the shriek seized them in truth, and We made them as [plant] stubble. Then away with the wrongdoing people.

  42. 23:42Read in the mushaf ↗

Thumma arsalna rusulana tatra kulla ma jaa ommatan rasooluha kaththaboohu faatbaʿna baʿdahum baʿdan wajaʿalnahum ahadeetha fabuʿdan liqawmin la yuminoona

Then We sent Our messengers in succession. Every time there came to a nation its messenger, they denied him, so We made them follow one another [to destruction], and We made them narrations. So away with a people who do not believe.

  45. 23:45Read in the mushaf ↗

Wajaʿalna ibna maryama waommahu ayatan waawaynahuma ila rabwatin thati qararin wamaʿeenin

  51. 23:51Read in the mushaf ↗

Ya ayyuha alrrusulu kuloo mina alttayyibati waiʿmaloo salihan innee bima taʿmaloona ʿaleemun

Fataqattaʿoo amrahum baynahum zuburan kullu hizbin bima ladayhim farihoona

But they [i.e., the people] divided their religion among them into portions [i.e., sects] - each faction, in what it has, rejoicing.

Olaika yusariʿoona fee alkhayrati wahum laha sabiqoona

It is those who hasten to good deeds, and they outstrip [others] therein.

  62. 23:62Read in the mushaf ↗

Wala nukallifu nafsan illa wusʿaha waladayna kitabun yantiqu bialhaqqi wahum la yuthlamoona

And We charge no soul except [with that within] its capacity, and with Us is a record which speaks with truth; and they will not be wronged.

  63. 23:63Read in the mushaf ↗

Bal quloobuhum fee ghamratin min hatha walahum aʿmalun min dooni thalika hum laha ʿamiloona

But their hearts are covered with confusion over this, and they have [evil] deeds besides that [i.e., disbelief] which they are doing,

  64. 23:64Read in the mushaf ↗

Hatta itha akhathna mutrafeehim bialʿathabi itha hum yajaroona

Until when We seize their affluent ones with punishment, at once they are crying [to Allāh] for help.

  65. 23:65Read in the mushaf ↗

Do not cry out today. Indeed, by Us you will not be helped.

  66. 23:66Read in the mushaf ↗

Qad kanat ayatee tutla ʿalaykum fakuntum ʿala aʿqabikum tankisoona

My verses had already been recited to you, but you were turning back on your heels

  67. 23:67Read in the mushaf ↗

In arrogance regarding it, conversing by night, speaking evil.

  68. 23:68Read in the mushaf ↗

Afalam yaddabbaroo alqawla am jaahum ma lam yati abaahumu alawwaleena

Then have they not reflected over the word [i.e., the Qur’ān], or has there come to them that which had not come to their forefathers?

  69. 23:69Read in the mushaf ↗

Or did they not know their Messenger, so they are toward him disacknowledging?

  70. 23:70Read in the mushaf ↗

Am yaqooloona bihi jinnatun bal jaahum bialhaqqi waaktharuhum lilhaqqi karihoona

Or do they say, "In him is madness"? Rather, he brought them the truth, but most of them, to the truth, are averse.

  71. 23:71Read in the mushaf ↗

Walawi ittabaʿa alhaqqu ahwaahum lafasadati alssamawatu waalardu waman feehinna bal ataynahum bithikrihim fahum ʿan thikrihim muʿridoona

But if the Truth [i.e., Allāh] had followed their inclinations, the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them would have been ruined. Rather, We have brought them their message, but they, from their message, are turning away.

  72. 23:72Read in the mushaf ↗

Am tasaluhum kharjan fakharaju rabbika khayrun wahuwa khayru alrraziqeena

Or do you, [O Muḥammad], ask them for payment? But the reward of your Lord is best, and He is the best of providers.

  73. 23:73Read in the mushaf ↗

Wainna allatheena la yuminoona bialakhirati ʿani alssirati lanakiboona

But indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are deviating from the path.

  75. 23:75Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaw rahimnahum wakashafna ma bihim min durrin lalajjoo fee tughyanihim yaʿmahoona

And even if We gave them mercy and removed what was upon them of affliction, they would persist in their transgression, wandering blindly.

  76. 23:76Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaqad akhathnahum bialʿathabi fama istakanoo lirabbihim wama yatadarraʿoona

And We had gripped them with suffering [as a warning], but they did not yield to their Lord, nor did they humbly supplicate, [and will continue thus]

  77. 23:77Read in the mushaf ↗

Hatta itha fatahna ʿalayhim baban tha ʿathabin shadeedin itha hum feehi mublisoona

Until when We have opened before them a door of severe punishment, immediately they will be therein in despair.

  78. 23:78Read in the mushaf ↗

Wahuwa allathee anshaa lakumu alssamʿa waalabsara waalafidata qaleelan ma tashkuroona

And it is He who produced for you hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect]; little are you grateful.

  79. 23:79Read in the mushaf ↗

Wahuwa allathee yuhyee wayumeetu walahu ikhtilafu allayli waalnnahari afala taʿqiloona

And it is He who gives life and causes death, and His is the alternation of the night and the day. Then will you not reason?

  81. 23:81Read in the mushaf ↗

Allāh has not taken any son, nor has there ever been with Him any deity. [If there had been], then each deity would have taken what it created, and some of them would have [sought to] overcome others. Exalted is Allāh above what they describe [concerning Him].

About this surah

Name

The surah takes its name, Al-Mu'minun, from the first verse.

Period of Revelation.

Both its style and theme indicate that it was revealed during the middle stage of Prophethood at Makkah. Reading between the lines, one feels that a bitter conflict had begun between the, Holy Prophet and the disbelievers of Makkah, though the persecution by them had not yet become tyrannical. It appears that the surah was sent down during the climax of the "Famine" in Makkah (vv. 75-76), which according to authentic traditions occurred during the middle stage of Prophethood. Moreover, according to a tradition related by 'Urwah bin Zubair, Hadarat Umar who had embraced Islam by that time, said, "This Surah was revealed in my presence and I myself observed the state of the Holy Prophet during its revelation. When the revelation ended , the Holy Prophet remarked, 'On this occasion ten such verses have been sent down to me that the one who measures up to them, will most surely go to Paradise'. Then he recited the initial verses of the surah." (Ahmad, Tirmizi, Nasai, Hakim).

Theme Topics

The central theme of the surah is to invite disbelievers to accept Islam and follow the Message of the Holy Prophet.

Summary

The fact that people who have accepted the Message of the Holy Prophet started acquiring such noble qualities of character is practical proof of the truth of the Message. 1-11

In this passage, attention has been drawn to the creation of man and the universe, and to reflect on man's own self, as clear proof of the truth of the Holy Prophet's Message, which invites people to accept Tauhid and life in the Hereafter. 12-22

Furthermore, the stories of the former Prophets and their communities have been cited as historical evidences of the truth of the Message. They prove the following points:

  1. The objections and the doubts that the antagonists are raising against the Message of Muhammad (Allah's peace be upon him) are not new. These were raised against the former Prophets also whom they themselves acknowledged as Messengers of Allah. Therefore they should learn a lesson from their history and judge for themselves whether the Prophets were in the right or their objectors.
  2. The Message of Tauhid and the Hereafter that Muhammad (Allah's peace be upon him) is conveying is the same as was brought by the former Prophets; therefore they should accept it.
  3. They should take a warning from the consequences met by those communities who rejected the Message of their Prophets.
  4. All the Prophets brought one and the same religion from Allah and they all belonged to one and the same community. All other religions were invented by people themselves and none of them is from Allah. 23-54

After relating the stories of the Prophets, a fundamental principle has been enunciated: Success and prosperity in the worldly life is not a criterion of success in the sight of Allah. If some persons (or a person) are enjoying prosperity, wealth, power and the like in this world, it does not mean that they are favored by Allah. Conversely, poverty and adversity of people is not a sign that Allah is displeased with them. The real criterion is Faith (or lack of it). This declaration was needed because the antagonists of the Holy Prophet were the great chiefs of Makkah, who (and their followers) were deluded by their own prosperity that God and their deities were well pleased with them. On the other hand, they argued, the fact that Muhammad (Allah's peace be upon him) and his followers were indigent and in a state of helplessness, was a clear proof that Allah was not pleased with them, and they were under the curse of their deities. 55-67

In this passage different arguments have been used to convince them that Muhammad (Allah's peace be upon him) was a true Prophet of Allah. Then they have been told that the Famine (vv. vv. 75-76) was merely a warning and therefore "it is better for you to mend your ways; otherwise you will be visited by a terrible scourge." 68-77

Again they have been invited to observe the Signs in the universe and in their own selves because these are clear proofs of the truth of the Message of the Holy Prophet. 78-95

The Holy Prophet has been told not to adopt any wrong way in retaliation to counteract the evil ways of the enemies, and to guard against the incitement of Satan. 96-97

In this concluding passage, the enemies of the truth have been warned that they shall have to render an account in the Hereafter and bear the consequences of their persecution of the Believers; therefore they should mend their ways. 98-118
