And Allāh knows what you conceal and what you declare.

  20. 16:20Read in the mushaf ↗

Waallatheena yadʿoona min dooni Allahi la yakhluqoona shayan wahum yukhlaqoona

And those they invoke other than Allāh create nothing, and they [themselves] are created.

  21. 16:21Read in the mushaf ↗

Amwatun ghayru ahyain wama yashʿuroona ayyana yubʿathoona

They are [in fact] dead, not alive, and they do not perceive when they will be resurrected.

  22. 16:22Read in the mushaf ↗

Ilahukum ilahun wahidun faallatheena la yuminoona bialakhirati quloobuhum munkiratun wahum mustakbiroona

Your god is one God. But those who do not believe in the Hereafter - their hearts are disapproving, and they are arrogant.

  23. 16:23Read in the mushaf ↗

Assuredly, Allāh knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, He does not like the arrogant.

  24. 16:24Read in the mushaf ↗

Waitha qeela lahum matha anzala rabbukum qaloo asateeru alawwaleena

And when it is said to them, "What has your Lord sent down?" they say, "Legends of the former peoples,"

  25. 16:25Read in the mushaf ↗

Liyahmiloo awzarahum kamilatan yawma alqiyamati wamin awzari allatheena yudilloonahum bighayri ʿilmin ala saa ma yaziroona

That they may bear their own burdens [i.e., sins] in full on the Day of Resurrection and some of the burdens of those whom they misguide without [i.e., by lack of] knowledge. Unquestionably, evil is that which they bear.

  26. 16:26Read in the mushaf ↗

Qad makara allatheena min qablihim faata Allahu bunyanahum mina alqawaʿidi fakharra ʿalayhimu alssaqfu min fawqihim waatahumu alʿathabu min haythu la yashʿuroona

Those before them had already plotted, but Allāh came at [i.e., uprooted] their building from the foundations, so the roof fell upon them from above them, and the punishment came to them from where they did not perceive.

  27. 16:27Read in the mushaf ↗

Thumma yawma alqiyamati yukhzeehim wayaqoolu ayna shurakaiya allatheena kuntum tushaqqoona feehim qala allatheena ootoo alʿilma inna alkhizya alyawma waalssooa ʿala alkafireena

Then on the Day of Resurrection He will disgrace them and say, "Where are My 'partners' for whom you used to oppose [the believers]?" Those who were given knowledge will say, "Indeed disgrace, this Day, and evil are upon the disbelievers" -

  28. 16:28Read in the mushaf ↗

Allatheena tatawaffahumu almalaikatu thalimee anfusihim faalqawoo alssalama ma kunna naʿmalu min sooin bala inna Allaha ʿaleemun bima kuntum taʿmaloona

The ones whom the angels take in death [while] wronging themselves, and [who] then offer submission, [saying], "We were not doing any evil." But, yes! Indeed, Allāh is Knowing of what you used to do.

  29. 16:29Read in the mushaf ↗

Faodkhuloo abwaba jahannama khalideena feeha falabisa mathwa almutakabbireena

So enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and how wretched is the residence of the arrogant.

  30. 16:30Read in the mushaf ↗

Waqeela lillatheena ittaqaw matha anzala rabbukum qaloo khayran lillatheena ahsanoo fee hathihi alddunya hasanatun waladaru alakhirati khayrun walaniʿma daru almuttaqeena

And it will be said to those who feared Allāh, "What did your Lord send down?" They will say, "[That which is] good." For those who do good in this world is good; and the home of the Hereafter is better. And how excellent is the home of the righteous -

  31. 16:31Read in the mushaf ↗

Jannatu ʿadnin yadkhuloonaha tajree min tahtiha alanharu lahum feeha ma yashaoona kathalika yajzee Allahu almuttaqeena

Gardens of perpetual residence, which they will enter, beneath which rivers flow. They will have therein whatever they wish. Thus does Allāh reward the righteous -

  32. 16:32Read in the mushaf ↗

Allatheena tatawaffahumu almalaikatu tayyibeena yaqooloona salamun ʿalaykumu odkhuloo aljannata bima kuntum taʿmaloona

The ones whom the angels take in death, [being] good and pure; [the angels] will say, "Peace be upon you. Enter Paradise for what you used to do."

  33. 16:33Read in the mushaf ↗

Hal yanthuroona illa an tatiyahumu almalaikatu aw yatiya amru rabbika kathalika faʿala allatheena min qablihim wama thalamahumu Allahu walakin kanoo anfusahum yathlimoona

Do they [i.e., the disbelievers] await except that the angels should come to them or there comes the command of your Lord? Thus did those do before them. And Allāh wronged them not, but they had been wronging themselves.

  34. 16:34Read in the mushaf ↗

Faasabahum sayyiatu ma ʿamiloo wahaqa bihim ma kanoo bihi yastahzioona

So they were struck by the evil consequences of what they did and were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.

  35. 16:35Read in the mushaf ↗

Waqala allatheena ashrakoo law shaa Allahu ma ʿabadna min doonihi min shayin nahnu wala abaona wala harramna min doonihi min shayin kathalika faʿala allatheena min qablihim fahal ʿala alrrusuli illa albalaghu almubeenu

And those who associate others with Allāh say, "If Allāh had willed, we would not have worshipped anything other than Him, neither we nor our fathers, nor would we have forbidden anything through other than Him." Thus did those do before them. So is there upon the messengers except [the duty of] clear notification?

  36. 16:36Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaqad baʿathna fee kulli ommatin rasoolan ani oʿbudoo Allaha waijtaniboo alttaghoota faminhum man hada Allahu waminhum man haqqat ʿalayhi alddalalatu faseeroo fee alardi faonthuroo kayfa kana ʿaqibatu almukaththibeena

And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship Allāh and avoid ṭāghūt." And among them were those whom Allāh guided, and among them were those upon whom error was [deservedly] decreed. So proceed [i.e., travel] through the earth and observe how was the end of the deniers.

  37. 16:37Read in the mushaf ↗

In tahris ʿala hudahum fainna Allaha la yahdee man yudillu wama lahum min nasireena

[Even] if you should strive for their guidance, [O Muḥammad], indeed, Allāh does not guide those He sends astray, and they will have no helpers.

  38. 16:38Read in the mushaf ↗

And they swear by Allāh their strongest oaths [that] Allāh will not resurrect one who dies. But yes - [it is] a true promise [binding] upon Him, but most of the people do not know.

  39. 16:39Read in the mushaf ↗

Liyubayyina lahumu allathee yakhtalifoona feehi waliyaʿlama allatheena kafaroo annahum kanoo kathibeena

[It is] so He will make clear to them [the truth of] that wherein they differ and so those who have disbelieved may know that they were liars.

  40. 16:40Read in the mushaf ↗

Innama qawluna lishayin itha aradnahu an naqoola lahu kun fayakoonu

Indeed, Our word to a thing when We intend it is but that We say to it, "Be," and it is.

  41. 16:41Read in the mushaf ↗

Waallatheena hajaroo fee Allahi min baʿdi ma thulimoo lanubawwiannahum fee alddunya hasanatan walaajru alakhirati akbaru law kanoo yaʿlamoona

And those who emigrated for [the cause of] Allāh after they had been wronged - We will surely settle them in this world in a good place; but the reward of the Hereafter is greater, if only they could know.

  42. 16:42Read in the mushaf ↗

    Allatheena sabaroo waʿala rabbihim yatawakkaloona

[They are] those who endured patiently and upon their Lord relied.

  43. 16:43Read in the mushaf ↗

Wama arsalna min qablika illa rijalan noohee ilayhim faisaloo ahla alththikri in kuntum la taʿlamoona

And We sent not before you except men to whom We revealed [Our message]. So ask the people of the message [i.e., former scriptures] if you do not know.

  44. 16:44Read in the mushaf ↗

Bialbayyinati waalzzuburi waanzalna ilayka alththikra litubayyina lilnnasi ma nuzzila ilayhim walaʿallahum yatafakkaroona

[We sent them] with clear proofs and written ordinances. And We revealed to you the message [i.e., the Qur’ān] that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them and that they might give thought.

  45. 16:45Read in the mushaf ↗

Afaamina allatheena makaroo alssayyiati an yakhsifa Allahu bihimu alarda aw yatiyahumu alʿathabu min haythu la yashʿuroona

Then, do those who have planned evil deeds feel secure that Allāh will not cause the earth to swallow them or that the punishment will not come upon them from where they do not perceive?

  46. 16:46Read in the mushaf ↗

Aw yakhuthahum fee taqallubihim fama hum bimuʿjizeena

Or that He would not seize them during their [usual] activity, and they could not cause failure [i.e., escape from Him]?

  47. 16:47Read in the mushaf ↗

Aw yakhuthahum ʿala takhawwufin fainna rabbakum laraoofun raheemun

Or that He would not seize them gradually [in a state of dread]? But indeed, your Lord is Kind and Merciful.

  48. 16:48Read in the mushaf ↗

Awa lam yaraw ila ma khalaqa Allahu min shayin yatafayyao thilaluhu ʿani alyameeni waalshshamaili sujjadan lillahi wahum dakhiroona

Have they not considered what things Allāh has created? Their shadows incline to the right and to the left, prostrating to Allāh, while they [i.e., those creations] are humble.

  49. 16:49Read in the mushaf ↗

Walillahi yasjudu ma fee alssamawati wama fee alardi min dabbatin waalmalaikatu wahum la yastakbiroona

And to Allāh prostrates whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth of creatures, and the angels [as well], and they are not arrogant.

  50. 16:50Read in the mushaf ↗

Yakhafoona rabbahum min fawqihim wayafʿaloona ma yumaroona

They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded.

  51. 16:51Read in the mushaf ↗

Waqala Allahu la tattakhithoo ilahayni ithnayni innama huwa ilahun wahidun faiyyaya fairhabooni

And Allāh has said, "Do not take for yourselves two deities. He [i.e., Allāh] is but one God, so fear only Me."

  52. 16:52Read in the mushaf ↗

Walahu ma fee alssamawati waalardi walahu alddeenu wasiban afaghayra Allahi tattaqoona

And to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth, and to Him is [due] worship constantly. Then is it other than Allāh that you fear?

  53. 16:53Read in the mushaf ↗

Wama bikum min niʿmatin famina Allahi thumma itha massakumu alddurru failayhi tajaroona

And whatever you have of favor - it is from Allāh. Then when adversity touches you, to Him you cry for help.

  54. 16:54Read in the mushaf ↗

Thumma itha kashafa alddurra ʿankum itha fareequn minkum birabbihim yushrikoona

Then when He removes the adversity from you, at once a party of you associates others with their Lord

  55. 16:55Read in the mushaf ↗

Liyakfuroo bima ataynahum fatamattaʿoo fasawfa taʿlamoona

So they will deny what We have given them. Then enjoy yourselves, for you are going to know.

  56. 16:56Read in the mushaf ↗

Wayajʿaloona lima la yaʿlamoona naseeban mimma razaqnahum taAllahi latusalunna ʿamma kuntum taftaroona

And they assign to what they do not know [i.e., false deities] a portion of that which We have provided them. By Allāh, you will surely be questioned about what you used to invent.

  57. 16:57Read in the mushaf ↗

Wayajʿaloona lillahi albanati subhanahu walahum ma yashtahoona

And they attribute to Allāh daughters - exalted is He - and for them is what they desire [i.e., sons].

  58. 16:58Read in the mushaf ↗

Waitha bushshira ahaduhum bialontha thalla wajhuhu muswaddan wahuwa katheemun

And when one of them is informed of [the birth of] a female, his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.

  59. 16:59Read in the mushaf ↗

Yatawara mina alqawmi min sooi ma bushshira bihi ayumsikuhu ʿala hoonin am yadussuhu fee altturabi ala saa ma yahkumoona

He hides himself from the people because of the ill of which he has been informed. Should he keep it in humiliation or bury it in the ground? Unquestionably, evil is what they decide.

  60. 16:60Read in the mushaf ↗

For those who do not believe in the Hereafter is the description [i.e., an attribute] of evil; and for Allāh is the highest attribute. And He is Exalted in Might, the Wise.

  61. 16:61Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaw yuakhithu Allahu alnnasa bithulmihim ma taraka ʿalayha min dabbatin walakin yuakhkhiruhum ila ajalin musamman faitha jaa ajaluhum la yastakhiroona saʿatan wala yastaqdimoona

And if Allāh were to impose blame on the people for their wrongdoing, He would not have left upon it [i.e., the earth] any creature, but He defers them for a specified term. And when their term has come, they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it].

  62. 16:62Read in the mushaf ↗

Wayajʿaloona lillahi ma yakrahoona watasifu alsinatuhumu alkathiba anna lahumu alhusna la jarama anna lahumu alnnara waannahum mufratoona

And they attribute to Allāh that which they dislike [i.e., daughters], and their tongues assert the lie that they will have the best [from Him]. Assuredly, they will have the Fire, and they will be [therein] neglected.

  63. 16:63Read in the mushaf ↗

TaAllahi laqad arsalna ila omamin min qablika fazayyana lahumu alshshaytanu aʿmalahum fahuwa waliyyuhumu alyawma walahum ʿathabun aleemun

By Allāh, We did certainly send [messengers] to nations before you, but Satan made their deeds attractive to them. And he is their [i.e., the disbelievers] ally today [as well], and they will have a painful punishment.

  64. 16:64Read in the mushaf ↗

Wama anzalna ʿalayka alkitaba illa litubayyina lahumu allathee ikhtalafoo feehi wahudan warahmatan liqawmin yuminoona

And We have not revealed to you the Book, [O Muḥammad], except for you to make clear to them that wherein they have differed and as guidance and mercy for a people who believe.

  65. 16:65Read in the mushaf ↗

WaAllahu anzala mina alssamai maan faahya bihi alarda baʿda mawtiha inna fee thalika laayatan liqawmin yasmaʿoona

And Allāh has sent down rain from the sky and given life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who listen.

  66. 16:66Read in the mushaf ↗

Wainna lakum fee alanʿami laʿibratan nusqeekum mimma fee butoonihi min bayni farthin wadamin labanan khalisan saighan lilshsharibeena

And indeed, for you in grazing livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from what is in their bellies - between excretion and blood - pure milk, palatable to drinkers.

  67. 16:67Read in the mushaf ↗

Wamin thamarati alnnakheeli waalaʿnabi tattakhithoona minhu sakaran warizqan hasanan inna fee thalika laayatan liqawmin yaʿqiloona

And from the fruits of the palm trees and grapevines you take intoxicant and good provision. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who reason.

  68. 16:68Read in the mushaf ↗

Waawha rabbuka ila alnnahli ani ittakhithee mina aljibali buyootan wamina alshshajari wamimma yaʿrishoona

And your Lord inspired to the bee, "Take for yourself among the mountains, houses [i.e., hives], and among the trees and [in] that which they construct.

  69. 16:69Read in the mushaf ↗

Thumma kulee min kulli alththamarati faoslukee subula rabbiki thululan yakhruju min butooniha sharabun mukhtalifun alwanuhu feehi shifaon lilnnasi inna fee thalika laayatan liqawmin yatafakkaroona

Then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you]." There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought.

  70. 16:70Read in the mushaf ↗

WaAllahu khalaqakum thumma yatawaffakum waminkum man yuraddu ila arthali alʿumuri likay la yaʿlama baʿda ʿilmin shayan inna Allaha ʿaleemun qadeerun

And Allāh created you; then He will take you in death. And among you is he who is reversed to the most decrepit [old] age so that he will not know, after [having had] knowledge, a thing. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing and Competent.

  71. 16:71Read in the mushaf ↗

WaAllahu faddala baʿdakum ʿala baʿdin fee alrrizqi fama allatheena fuddiloo biraddee rizqihim ʿala ma malakat aymanuhum fahum feehi sawaon afabiniʿmati Allahi yajhadoona

And Allāh has favored some of you over others in provision. But those who were favored [i.e., given more] would not hand over their provision to those whom their right hands possess [i.e., slaves] so they would be equal to them therein. Then is it the favor of Allāh they reject?

  72. 16:72Read in the mushaf ↗

WaAllahu jaʿala lakum min anfusikum azwajan wajaʿala lakum min azwajikum baneena wahafadatan warazaqakum mina alttayyibati afabialbatili yuminoona wabiniʿmati Allahi hum yakfuroona

And Allāh has made for you from yourselves mates and has made for you from your mates sons and grandchildren and has provided for you from the good things. Then in falsehood do they believe and in the favor of Allāh they disbelieve?

  73. 16:73Read in the mushaf ↗

Wayaʿbudoona min dooni Allahi ma la yamliku lahum rizqan mina alssamawati waalardi shayan wala yastateeʿoona

And they worship besides Allāh that which does not possess for them [the power of] provision from the heavens and the earth at all, and [in fact], they are unable.

  74. 16:74Read in the mushaf ↗

So do not assert similarities to Allāh. Indeed, Allāh knows and you do not know.

  75. 16:75Read in the mushaf ↗

Daraba Allahu mathalan ʿabdan mamlookan la yaqdiru ʿala shayin waman razaqnahu minna rizqan hasanan fahuwa yunfiqu minhu sirran wajahran hal yastawoona alhamdu lillahi bal aktharuhum la yaʿlamoona

Allāh presents an example: a slave [who is] owned and unable to do a thing and he to whom We have provided from Us good provision, so he spends from it secretly and publicly. Can they be equal? Praise to Allāh! But most of them do not know.

  76. 16:76Read in the mushaf ↗

Wadaraba Allahu mathalan rajulayni ahaduhuma abkamu la yaqdiru ʿala shayin wahuwa kallun ʿala mawlahu aynama yuwajjihhu la yati bikhayrin hal yastawee huwa waman yamuru bialʿadli wahuwa ʿala siratin mustaqeemin

And Allāh presents an example of two men, one of them dumb and unable to do a thing, while he is a burden to his guardian. Wherever he directs him, he brings no good. Is he equal to one who commands justice, while he is on a straight path?

  77. 16:77Read in the mushaf ↗

Walillahi ghaybu alssamawati waalardi wama amru alssaʿati illa kalamhi albasari aw huwa aqrabu inna Allaha ʿala kulli shayin qadeerun

And to Allāh belongs the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. And the command for the Hour is not but as a glance of the eye or even nearer. Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.

  78. 16:78Read in the mushaf ↗

WaAllahu akhrajakum min butooni ommahatikum la taʿlamoona shayan wajaʿala lakumu alssamʿa waalabsara waalafidata laʿallakum tashkuroona

And Allāh has extracted you from the wombs of your mothers not knowing a thing, and He made for you hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect] that perhaps you would be grateful.

  79. 16:79Read in the mushaf ↗

Alam yaraw ila alttayri musakhkharatin fee jawwi alssamai ma yumsikuhunna illa Allahu inna fee thalika laayatin liqawmin yuminoona

Do they not see the birds controlled in the atmosphere of the sky? None holds them up except Allāh. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.

  80. 16:80Read in the mushaf ↗

WaAllahu jaʿala lakum min buyootikum sakanan wajaʿala lakum min juloodi alanʿami buyootan tastakhiffoonaha yawma thaʿnikum wayawma iqamatikum wamin aswafiha waawbariha waashʿariha athathan wamataʿan ila heenin

And Allāh has made for you from your homes a place of rest and made for you from the hides of the animals tents which you find light on your day of travel and your day of encampment; and from their wool, fur and hair is furnishing and enjoyment [i.e., provision] for a time.

  81. 16:81Read in the mushaf ↗

WaAllahu jaʿala lakum mimma khalaqa thilalan wajaʿala lakum mina aljibali aknanan wajaʿala lakum sarabeela taqeekumu alharra wasarabeela taqeekum basakum kathalika yutimmu niʿmatahu ʿalaykum laʿallakum tuslimoona

And Allāh has made for you, from that which He has created, shadows [i.e., shade] and has made for you from the mountains, shelters and has made for you garments which protect you from the heat and garments [i.e., coats of mail] which protect you from your [enemy in] battle. Thus does He complete His favor upon you that you might submit [to Him].

  82. 16:82Read in the mushaf ↗

Fain tawallaw fainnama ʿalayka albalaghu almubeenu

But if they turn away, [O Muḥammad] - then only upon you is [responsibility for] clear notification.

  83. 16:83Read in the mushaf ↗

They recognize the favor of Allāh; then they deny it. And most of them are disbelievers.

  84. 16:84Read in the mushaf ↗

Wayawma nabʿathu min kulli ommatin shaheedan thumma la yuthanu lillatheena kafaroo wala hum yustaʿtaboona

And [mention] the Day when We will resurrect from every nation a witness [i.e., their prophet]. Then it will not be permitted to the disbelievers [to apologize or make excuses], nor will they be asked to appease [Allāh].

  85. 16:85Read in the mushaf ↗

Waitha raa allatheena thalamoo alʿathaba fala yukhaffafu ʿanhum wala hum yuntharoona

And when those who wronged see the punishment, it will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved.

  86. 16:86Read in the mushaf ↗

Waitha raa allatheena ashrakoo shurakaahum qaloo rabbana haolai shurakaona allatheena kunna nadʿoo min doonika faalqaw ilayhimu alqawla innakum lakathiboona

And when those who associated others with Allāh see their "partners," they will say, "Our Lord, these are our partners [to You] whom we used to invoke [in worship] besides You." But they will throw at them the statement, "Indeed, you are liars."

  87. 16:87Read in the mushaf ↗

Waalqaw ila Allahi yawmaithin alssalama wadalla ʿanhum ma kanoo yaftaroona

And they will impart to Allāh that Day [their] submission, and lost from them is what they used to invent.

  88. 16:88Read in the mushaf ↗

Allatheena kafaroo wasaddoo ʿan sabeeli Allahi zidnahum ʿathaban fawqa alʿathabi bima kanoo yufsidoona

Those who disbelieved and averted [others] from the way of Allāh - We will increase them in punishment over [their] punishment for what corruption they were causing.

  89. 16:89Read in the mushaf ↗

Wayawma nabʿathu fee kulli ommatin shaheedan ʿalayhim min anfusihim wajina bika shaheedan ʿala haolai wanazzalna ʿalayka alkitaba tibyanan likulli shayin wahudan warahmatan wabushra lilmuslimeena

And [mention] the Day when We will resurrect among every nation a witness over them from themselves [i.e., their prophet]. And We will bring you, [O Muḥammad], as a witness over these [i.e., your nation]. And We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things and as guidance and mercy and good tidings for the Muslims.

  90. 16:90Read in the mushaf ↗

Inna Allaha yamuru bialʿadli waalihsani waeetai thee alqurba wayanha ʿani alfahshai waalmunkari waalbaghyi yaʿithukum laʿallakum tathakkaroona

Indeed, Allāh orders justice and good conduct and giving [help] to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.

  91. 16:91Read in the mushaf ↗

Waawfoo biʿahdi Allahi itha ʿahadtum wala tanqudoo alaymana baʿda tawkeediha waqad jaʿaltumu Allaha ʿalaykum kafeelan inna Allaha yaʿlamu ma tafʿaloona

And fulfill the covenant of Allāh when you have taken it, [O believers], and do not break oaths after their confirmation while you have made Allāh, over you, a security [i.e., witness]. Indeed, Allāh knows what you do.

  92. 16:92Read in the mushaf ↗

Wala takoonoo kaallatee naqadat ghazlaha min baʿdi quwwatin ankathan tattakhithoona aymanakum dakhalan baynakum an takoona ommatun hiya arba min ommatin innama yablookumu Allahu bihi walayubayyinanna lakum yawma alqiyamati ma kuntum feehi takhtalifoona

And do not be like she who untwisted her spun thread after it was strong [by] taking your oaths as [means of] deceit between you because one community is more plentiful [in number or wealth] than another community. Allāh only tries you thereby. And He will surely make clear to you on the Day of Resurrection that over which you used to differ.

  93. 16:93Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaw shaa Allahu lajaʿalakum ommatan wahidatan walakin yudillu man yashao wayahdee man yashao walatusalunna ʿamma kuntum taʿmaloona

And if Allāh had willed, He could have made you [of] one religion, but He sends astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And you will surely be questioned about what you used to do.

  94. 16:94Read in the mushaf ↗

Wala tattakhithoo aymanakum dakhalan baynakum fatazilla qadamun baʿda thubootiha watathooqoo alssooa bima sadadtum ʿan sabeeli Allahi walakum ʿathabun ʿatheemun

And do not take your oaths as [means of] deceit between you, lest a foot slip after it was [once] firm, and you would taste evil [in this world] for what [people] you diverted from the way of Allāh, and you would have [in the Hereafter] a great punishment.

  95. 16:95Read in the mushaf ↗

Wala tashtaroo biʿahdi Allahi thamanan qaleelan innama ʿinda Allahi huwa khayrun lakum in kuntum taʿlamoona

And do not exchange the covenant of Allāh for a small price. Indeed, what is with Allāh is best for you, if only you could know.

  96. 16:96Read in the mushaf ↗

Ma ʿindakum yanfadu wama ʿinda Allahi baqin walanajziyanna allatheena sabaroo ajrahum biahsani ma kanoo yaʿmaloona

Whatever you have will end, but what Allāh has is lasting. And We will surely give those who were patient their reward according to the best of what they used to do.

  97. 16:97Read in the mushaf ↗

Man ʿamila salihan min thakarin aw ontha wahuwa muminun falanuhyiyannahu hayatan tayyibatan walanajziyannahum ajrahum biahsani ma kanoo yaʿmaloona

Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.

  98. 16:98Read in the mushaf ↗

Faitha qarata alqurana faistaʿith biAllahi mina alshshaytani alrrajeemi

So when you recite the Qur’ān, [first] seek refuge in Allāh from Satan, the expelled [from His mercy].

  99. 16:99Read in the mushaf ↗

Innahu laysa lahu sultanun ʿala allatheena amanoo waʿala rabbihim yatawakkaloona

Indeed, there is for him no authority over those who have believed and rely upon their Lord.

  100. 16:100Read in the mushaf ↗

Innama sultanuhu ʿala allatheena yatawallawnahu waallatheena hum bihi mushrikoona

His authority is only over those who take him as an ally and those who through him associate others with Allāh.

  101. 16:101Read in the mushaf ↗

Waitha baddalna ayatan makana ayatin waAllahu aʿlamu bima yunazzilu qaloo innama anta muftarin bal aktharuhum la yaʿlamoona

And when We substitute a verse in place of a verse - and Allāh is most knowing of what He sends down - they say, "You, [O Muḥammad], are but an inventor [of lies]." But most of them do not know.

  102. 16:102Read in the mushaf ↗

Qul nazzalahu roohu alqudusi min rabbika bialhaqqi liyuthabbita allatheena amanoo wahudan wabushra lilmuslimeena

Say, [O Muḥammad], "The Pure Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] has brought it down from your Lord in truth to make firm those who believe and as guidance and good tidings to the Muslims."

  103. 16:103Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaqad naʿlamu annahum yaqooloona innama yuʿallimuhu basharun lisanu allathee yulhidoona ilayhi aʿjamiyyun wahatha lisanun ʿarabiyyun mubeenun

And We certainly know that they say, "It is only a human being who teaches him [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)]." The tongue of the one they refer to is foreign, and this [recitation, i.e., Qur’ān] is [in] a clear Arabic language.

  104. 16:104Read in the mushaf ↗

Inna allatheena la yuminoona biayati Allahi la yahdeehimu Allahu walahum ʿathabun aleemun

Indeed, those who do not believe in the verses of Allāh - Allāh will not guide them, and for them is a painful punishment.

  105. 16:105Read in the mushaf ↗

Innama yaftaree alkathiba allatheena la yuminoona biayati Allahi waolaika humu alkathiboona

They only invent falsehood who do not believe in the verses of Allāh, and it is those who are the liars.

  106. 16:106Read in the mushaf ↗

Man kafara biAllahi min baʿdi eemanihi illa man okriha waqalbuhu mutmainnun bialeemani walakin man sharaha bialkufri sadran faʿalayhim ghadabun mina Allahi walahum ʿathabun ʿatheemun

    Whoever disbelieves in [i.e., denies] Allāh after his belief... except for one who is forced [to renounce his religion] while his heart is secure in faith. But those who [willingly] open their breasts to disbelief, upon them is wrath from Allāh, and for them is a great punishment;

  107. 16:107Read in the mushaf ↗

Thalika biannahumu istahabboo alhayata alddunya ʿala alakhirati waanna Allaha la yahdee alqawma alkafireena

That is because they preferred the worldly life over the Hereafter and that Allāh does not guide the disbelieving people.

  108. 16:108Read in the mushaf ↗

Olaika allatheena tabaʿa Allahu ʿala quloobihim wasamʿihim waabsarihim waolaika humu alghafiloona

Those are the ones over whose hearts and hearing and vision Allāh has sealed, and it is those who are the heedless.

  109. 16:109Read in the mushaf ↗

La jarama annahum fee alakhirati humu alkhasiroona

Assuredly, it is they, in the Hereafter, who will be the losers.

  110. 16:110Read in the mushaf ↗

Thumma inna rabbaka lillatheena hajaroo min baʿdi ma futinoo thumma jahadoo wasabaroo inna rabbaka min baʿdiha laghafoorun raheemun

Then, indeed your Lord, to those who emigrated after they had been compelled [to say words of disbelief] and thereafter fought [for the cause of Allāh] and were patient - indeed, your Lord, after that, is Forgiving and Merciful

  111. 16:111Read in the mushaf ↗

Yawma tatee kullu nafsin tujadilu ʿan nafsiha watuwaffa kullu nafsin ma ʿamilat wahum la yuthlamoona

On the Day when every soul will come disputing [i.e., pleading] for itself, and every soul will be fully compensated for what it did, and they will not be wronged [i.e., treated unjustly].

  112. 16:112Read in the mushaf ↗

Wadaraba Allahu mathalan qaryatan kanat aminatan mutmainnatan yateeha rizquha raghadan min kulli makanin fakafarat bianʿumi Allahi faathaqaha Allahu libasa aljooʿi waalkhawfi bima kanoo yasnaʿoona

And Allāh presents an example: a city [i.e., Makkah] which was safe and secure, its provision coming to it in abundance from every location, but it denied the favors of Allāh. So Allāh made it taste the envelopment of hunger and fear for what they had been doing.

  113. 16:113Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaqad jaahum rasoolun minhum fakaththaboohu faakhathahumu alʿathabu wahum thalimoona

And there had certainly come to them a Messenger from among themselves, but they denied him; so punishment overtook them while they were wrongdoers.

  114. 16:114Read in the mushaf ↗

Fakuloo mimma razaqakumu Allahu halalan tayyiban waoshkuroo niʿmata Allahi in kuntum iyyahu taʿbudoona

Then eat of what Allāh has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And be grateful for the favor of Allāh, if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.

  115. 16:115Read in the mushaf ↗

Innama harrama ʿalaykumu almaytata waalddama walahma alkhinzeeri wama ohilla lighayri Allahi bihi famani idturra ghayra baghin wala ʿadin fainna Allaha ghafoorun raheemun

He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allāh. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit] - then indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

  116. 16:116Read in the mushaf ↗

Wala taqooloo lima tasifu alsinatukumu alkathiba hatha halalun wahatha haramun litaftaroo ʿala Allahi alkathiba inna allatheena yaftaroona ʿala Allahi alkathiba la yuflihoona

And do not say about what your tongues assert of untruth, "This is lawful and this is unlawful," to invent falsehood about Allāh. Indeed, those who invent falsehood about Allāh will not succeed.

  117. 16:117Read in the mushaf ↗

    Mataʿun qaleelun walahum ʿathabun aleemun

[It is but] a brief enjoyment, and they will have a painful punishment.

  118. 16:118Read in the mushaf ↗

Waʿala allatheena hadoo harramna ma qasasna ʿalayka min qablu wama thalamnahum walakin kanoo anfusahum yathlimoona

And to those who are Jews We have prohibited that which We related to you before. And We did not wrong them [thereby], but they were wronging themselves.

  119. 16:119Read in the mushaf ↗

Thumma inna rabbaka lillatheena ʿamiloo alssooa bijahalatin thumma taboo min baʿdi thalika waaslahoo inna rabbaka min baʿdiha laghafoorun raheemun

Then, indeed your Lord, to those who have done wrong out of ignorance and then repent after that and correct themselves - indeed, your Lord, thereafter, is Forgiving and Merciful.

  120. 16:120Read in the mushaf ↗

Inna ibraheema kana ommatan qanitan lillahi haneefan walam yaku mina almushrikeena

Indeed, Abraham was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allāh, inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allāh.

  121. 16:121Read in the mushaf ↗

Shakiran lianʿumihi ijtabahu wahadahu ila siratin mustaqeemin

[He was] grateful for His favors. He [i.e., Allāh] chose him and guided him to a straight path.

  122. 16:122Read in the mushaf ↗

Waataynahu fee alddunya hasanatan wainnahu fee alakhirati lamina alssaliheena

And We gave him good in this world, and indeed, in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous.

  123. 16:123Read in the mushaf ↗

Thumma awhayna ilayka ani ittabiʿ millata ibraheema haneefan wama kana mina almushrikeena

Then We revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], to follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of those who associate with Allāh.

  124. 16:124Read in the mushaf ↗

Innama juʿila alssabtu ʿala allatheena ikhtalafoo feehi wainna rabbaka layahkumu baynahum yawma alqiyamati feema kanoo feehi yakhtalifoona

The sabbath was only appointed for those who differed over it. And indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.

  125. 16:125Read in the mushaf ↗

Odʿu ila sabeeli rabbika bialhikmati waalmawʿithati alhasanati wajadilhum biallatee hiya ahsanu inna rabbaka huwa aʿlamu biman dalla ʿan sabeelihi wahuwa aʿlamu bialmuhtadeena

Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided.

  126. 16:126Read in the mushaf ↗

Wain ʿaqabtum faʿaqiboo bimithli ma ʿooqibtum bihi walain sabartum lahuwa khayrun lilssabireena

And if you punish [an enemy, O believers], punish with an equivalent of that with which you were harmed. But if you are patient - it is better for those who are patient.

  127. 16:127Read in the mushaf ↗

Waisbir wama sabruka illa biAllahi wala tahzan ʿalayhim wala taku fee dayqin mimma yamkuroona

And be patient, [O Muḥammad], and your patience is not but through Allāh. And do not grieve over them and do not be in distress over what they conspire.

  128. 16:128Read in the mushaf ↗

Inna Allaha maʿa allatheena ittaqaw waallatheena hum muhsinoona

Indeed, Allāh is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good.

About this surah

Name

The name, An-Nahl, of this Surah has been taken from v. 68. This is merely to distinguish it from other Surahs.

Period of Revelation

The following internal evidence shows that this Surah was revealed during the last Makkan stage of Prophethood:

  1. 41 clearly shows that persecution had forced some Muslims to emigrate to Habash before the revelation of this Surah.

  2. It is evident from v. 106 that at that time the persecution of the Muslims was at its height. Therefore a problem had arisen in regard to the utterance of a blasphemous word, without actual disbelief, under unbearable conditions. The problem was that if one did so how he should be treated.

  3. vv. 112-114 clearly refer to the end of seven year famine that had struck Makkah some years after the appointment of the Holy Prophet as Allah's Messenger.

  4. There is a reference to v. 116 of this Surah in VI: 145, and v. 118 of this Surah contains a reference to VI: 146. This is a proof that both these Surahs (VI and XVI) were sent down in the same period.

The general style of the Surah also supports the view that this was revealed during the last stage at Makkah.

Central Theme

All the topics of the Surah revolve round different aspects of the Message, ie., refutation of shirk, proof of Tauhid, and warning of the consequences of the rejection of and opposition and antagonism to the Message.

Topics of Discussion

The very first verse gives direct and strict warning to those who were rejecting the Message outright, as if to say, "Allah's decision has already been made concerning your rejection of the Message. Why are you then clamoring for hastening it? Why don't you make use of the respite that is being given to you!" And this was exactly what the disbelievers of Makkah needed at the time of the revelation of this Surah. For they challenged the Holy Prophet over and over again: "Why don't you bring that scourge with which you have been threatening us! For we have not only rejected your Message but have been openly opposing it for a long time." Such a challenge had become a by-word with them, which they frequently repeated as a clear proof that Muhammad (Allah's peace be upon him) was not a true Prophet.

Immediately after this warning they have been admonished to give up shirk, for this false creed was the main obstacle in the way of the Message. Then the following topics come over and over again, one after the other:

  1. Very convincing proofs of Tauhid and refutation of shirk have been based on the plain signs in the universe and in man's own self.

  2. The objections of the disbelievers have been answered, their arguments refuted, their doubts removed and their false pretexts exposed.

  3. Warnings have given of the consequences of persistence in false ways and antagonism to the Message.

  4. The moral changes which the Message of the Holy Prophet aims to bring practically in human life have been presented briefly in an appealing manner. The mushriks have been told that belief in Allah, which they also professed, demanded that it should not be confined merely to lip service, but this creed should take a definite shape in moral and practical life.

  5. The Holy Prophet and his companions have been comforted and told about the attitude they should adopt in the face of antagonism and persecution by the disbelievers.
