Aliflamra tilka ayatu alkitabi waquranin mubeenin

Alif, Lām, Rā. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur’ān [i.e., recitation].

  2. 15:2Read in the mushaf ↗

Rubama yawaddu allatheena kafaroo law kanoo muslimeena

Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims.

  3. 15:3Read in the mushaf ↗

Tharhum yakuloo wayatamattaʿoo wayulhihimu alamalu fasawfa yaʿlamoona

Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know.

  4. 15:4Read in the mushaf ↗

Wama ahlakna min qaryatin illa walaha kitabun maʿloomun

And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree.

  5. 15:5Read in the mushaf ↗

Ma tasbiqu min ommatin ajalaha wama yastakhiroona

No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter.

  6. 15:6Read in the mushaf ↗

Waqaloo ya ayyuha allathee nuzzila ʿalayhi alththikru innaka lamajnoonun

And they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad.

  7. 15:7Read in the mushaf ↗

Law ma tateena bialmalaikati in kunta mina alssadiqeena

Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?"

  8. 15:8Read in the mushaf ↗

Ma nunazzilu almalaikata illa bialhaqqi wama kanoo ithan munthareena

We do not send down the angels except with truth; and they [i.e., the disbelievers] would not then be reprieved.

  9. 15:9Read in the mushaf ↗

Inna nahnu nazzalna alththikra wainna lahu lahafithoona

Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., the Qur’ān], and indeed, We will be its guardian.

  10. 15:10Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaqad arsalna min qablika fee shiyaʿi alawwaleena

And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muḥammad], among the sects of the former peoples.

  11. 15:11Read in the mushaf ↗

Wama yateehim min rasoolin illa kanoo bihi yastahzioona

And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him.

  12. 15:12Read in the mushaf ↗

    Kathalika naslukuhu fee quloobi almujrimeena

Thus do We insert it [i.e., denial] into the hearts of the criminals.

  13. 15:13Read in the mushaf ↗

La yuminoona bihi waqad khalat sunnatu alawwaleena

They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples.

  14. 15:14Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaw fatahna ʿalayhim baban mina alssamai fathalloo feehi yaʿrujoona

And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend,

  15. 15:15Read in the mushaf ↗

Laqaloo innama sukkirat absaruna bal nahnu qawmun mashooroona

They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic."

  16. 15:16Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaqad jaʿalna fee alssamai buroojan wazayyannaha lilnnathireena

And We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers.

  17. 15:17Read in the mushaf ↗

    Wahafithnaha min kulli shaytanin rajeemin

And We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allāh]

  18. 15:18Read in the mushaf ↗

Illa mani istaraqa alssamʿa faatbaʿahu shihabun mubeenun

Except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame.

  19. 15:19Read in the mushaf ↗

Waalarda madadnaha waalqayna feeha rawasiya waanbatna feeha min kulli shayin mawzoonin

And the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing.

  20. 15:20Read in the mushaf ↗

Wajaʿalna lakum feeha maʿayisha waman lastum lahu biraziqeena

And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers.

  21. 15:21Read in the mushaf ↗

Wain min shayin illa ʿindana khazainuhu wama nunazziluhu illa biqadarin maʿloomin

And there is not a thing but that with Us are its depositories, and We do not send it down except according to a known [i.e., specified] measure.

  22. 15:22Read in the mushaf ↗

Waarsalna alrriyaha lawaqiha faanzalna mina alssamai maan faasqaynakumoohu wama antum lahu bikhazineena

And We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky and given you drink from it. And you are not its retainers.

  23. 15:23Read in the mushaf ↗

Wainna lanahnu nuhyee wanumeetu wanahnu alwarithoona

And indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor.

  24. 15:24Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaqad ʿalimna almustaqdimeena minkum walaqad ʿalimna almustakhireena

And We have already known the preceding [generations] among you, and We have already known the later [ones to come].

  25. 15:25Read in the mushaf ↗

Faasri biahlika biqitʿin mina allayli waittabiʿ adbarahum wala yaltafit minkum ahadun waimdoo haythu tumaroona

So set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them and let not anyone among you look back and continue on to where you are commanded."

  66. 15:66Read in the mushaf ↗

Waqadayna ilayhi thalika alamra anna dabira haolai maqtooʿun musbiheena

And We conveyed to him [the decree] of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by early morning.

  67. 15:67Read in the mushaf ↗

And the people of the city came rejoicing.

[Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me.

  69. 15:69Read in the mushaf ↗

They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?"

  71. 15:71Read in the mushaf ↗

By your life, [O Muḥammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly.

  73. 15:73Read in the mushaf ↗

So the shriek seized them at sunrise.

  74. 15:74Read in the mushaf ↗

Fajaʿalna ʿaliyaha safilaha waamtarna ʿalayhim hijaratan min sijjeelin

And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.

  75. 15:75Read in the mushaf ↗

  77. 15:77Read in the mushaf ↗

And the companions of the thicket [i.e., the people of Madyan] were [also] wrongdoers,

  79. 15:79Read in the mushaf ↗

  81. 15:81Read in the mushaf ↗

And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure.

  83. 15:83Read in the mushaf ↗

But the shriek seized them at early morning,

  84. 15:84Read in the mushaf ↗

Fama aghna ʿanhum ma kanoo yaksiboona

So nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn.

  85. 15:85Read in the mushaf ↗

Wama khalaqna alssamawati waalarda wama baynahuma illa bialhaqqi wainna alssaʿata laatiyatun faisfahi alssafha aljameela

And We have not created the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth. And indeed, the Hour is coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness.

  86. 15:86Read in the mushaf ↗

Indeed, your Lord - He is the Knowing Creator.

  87. 15:87Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaqad ataynaka sabʿan mina almathanee waalqurana alʿatheema

And We have certainly given you, [O Muḥammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur’ān.

  88. 15:88Read in the mushaf ↗

La tamuddanna ʿaynayka ila ma mattaʿna bihi azwajan minhum wala tahzan ʿalayhim waikhfid janahaka lilmumineena

Do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of them [i.e., the disbelievers], and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing [i.e., show kindness] to the believers.

  89. 15:89Read in the mushaf ↗

    Waqul innee ana alnnatheeru almubeenu

And say, "Indeed, I am the clear warner" -

  90. 15:90Read in the mushaf ↗

    Kama anzalna ʿala almuqtasimeena

Just as We had revealed [scriptures] to the separators

  91. 15:91Read in the mushaf ↗

    Allatheena jaʿaloo alqurana ʿideena

Who have made the Qur’ān into portions.

  92. 15:92Read in the mushaf ↗

    Fawarabbika lanasalannahum ajmaʿeena

So by your Lord, We will surely question them all

  93. 15:93Read in the mushaf ↗

About what they used to do.

  94. 15:94Read in the mushaf ↗

Faisdaʿ bima tumaru waaʿrid ʿani almushrikeena

Then declare what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists.

  95. 15:95Read in the mushaf ↗

    Inna kafaynaka almustahzieena

Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers

  96. 15:96Read in the mushaf ↗

Allatheena yajʿaloona maʿa Allahi ilahan akhara fasawfa yaʿlamoona

Who make [equal] with Allāh another deity. But they are going to know.

  97. 15:97Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaqad naʿlamu annaka yadeequ sadruka bima yaqooloona

And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say.

  98. 15:98Read in the mushaf ↗

About this surah

Name

This Surah takes its name from v. 80.

Period of Revelation

It is clear from its topics and style that the period of its revelation is about the same as that of Surah Ibrahim, for two things are quite prominent in its background. First, it appears from the repeated warnings in this Surah that in spite of the fact that the Holy Prophet had been propagating the Message for many years, his people in general had not shown any inclination towards its acceptance nay, they had become more and more obdurate and stubborn in their antagonism, enmity and ridicule with the passage of time. Secondly, by that time the Holy Prophet had begun to feel a little tired of making strenuous efforts to eradicate disbelief and opposition of his people. That is why Allah has consoled and comforted him over and over again by way of encouragement.

Topics and the Central Theme

Though the main topics of the surah are:

  1. warning to those who rejected his Message, opposed it tooth and nail, and ridiculed him, and

  2. comfort and encouragement to the Holy Prophet,

It does not mean that this Surah does not contain admonition and instructions. As a matter of fact, the Quran never confines itself to mere warning; rebuke and censure, but resorts to precept in every suitable place. Accordingly, this Surah contains brief arguments for Tauhid on the one hand, and admonition in the story of Adam and Satan on the other.
