Aliflammeem
Alif, Lām, Meem.
Ahasiba alnnasu an yutrakoo an yaqooloo amanna wahum la yuftanoona
Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried?
Walaqad fatanna allatheena min qablihim falayaʿlamanna Allahu allatheena sadaqoo walayaʿlamanna alkathibeena
But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allāh will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.
Am hasiba allatheena yaʿmaloona alssayyiati an yasbiqoona saa ma yahkumoona
Or do those who do evil deeds think they can outrun [i.e., escape] Us? Evil is what they judge.
Man kana yarjoo liqaa Allahi fainna ajala Allahi laatin wahuwa alssameeʿu alʿaleemu
Whoever should hope for the meeting with Allāh - indeed, the term [decreed by] Allāh is coming. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
Waman jahada fainnama yujahidu linafsihi inna Allaha laghaniyyun ʿani alʿalameena
And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himself. Indeed, Allāh is Free from need of the worlds.
Waallatheena amanoo waʿamiloo alssalihati lanukaffiranna ʿanhum sayyiatihim walanajziyannahum ahsana allathee kanoo yaʿmaloona
And those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will surely remove from them their misdeeds and will surely reward them according to the best of what they used to do.
Wawassayna alinsana biwalidayhi husnan wain jahadaka litushrika bee ma laysa laka bihi ʿilmun fala tutiʿhuma ilayya marjiʿukum faonabbiokum bima kuntum taʿmaloona
And We have enjoined upon man goodness to parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.
Waallatheena amanoo waʿamiloo alssalihati lanudkhilannahum fee alssaliheena
And those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will surely admit them among the righteous [into Paradise].
Wamina alnnasi man yaqoolu amanna biAllahi faitha oothiya fee Allahi jaʿala fitnata alnnasi kaʿathabi Allahi walain jaa nasrun min rabbika layaqoolunna inna kunna maʿakum awalaysa Allahu biaʿlama bima fee sudoori alʿalameena
And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allāh," but when one [of them] is harmed for [the cause of] Allāh, he considers the trial [i.e., harm] of the people as [if it were] the punishment of Allāh. But if victory comes from your Lord, they say, "Indeed, We were with you." Is not Allāh most knowing of what is within the breasts of the worlds [i.e., all creatures]?
Walayaʿlamanna Allahu allatheena amanoo walayaʿlamanna almunafiqeena
And Allāh will surely make evident those who believe, and He will surely make evident the hypocrites.
Waqala allatheena kafaroo lillatheena amanoo ittabiʿoo sabeelana walnahmil khatayakum wama hum bihamileena min khatayahum min shayin innahum lakathiboona
And those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Follow our way, and we will carry your sins." But they will not carry anything of their sins. Indeed, they are liars.
Walayahmilunna athqalahum waathqalan maʿa athqalihim walayusalunna yawma alqiyamati ʿamma kanoo yaftaroona
But they will surely carry their [own] burdens and [other] burdens along with their burdens, and they will surely be questioned on the Day of Resurrection about what they used to invent.
Walaqad arsalna noohan ila qawmihi falabitha feehim alfa sanatin illa khamseena ʿaman faakhathahumu alttoofanu wahum thalimoona
And We certainly sent Noah to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty years, and the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers.
Faanjaynahu waashaba alssafeenati wajaʿalnaha ayatan lilʿalameena
But We saved him and the companions of the ship, and We made it a sign for the worlds.
Waibraheema ith qala liqawmihi oʿbudoo Allaha waittaqoohu thalikum khayrun lakum in kuntum taʿlamoona
And [We sent] Abraham, when he said to his people, "Worship Allāh and fear Him. That is best for you, if you should know.
Innama taʿbudoona min dooni Allahi awthanan watakhluqoona ifkan inna allatheena taʿbudoona min dooni Allahi la yamlikoona lakum rizqan faibtaghoo ʿinda Allahi alrrizqa waoʿbudoohu waoshkuroo lahu ilayhi turjaʿoona
You only worship, besides Allāh, idols, and you produce a falsehood. Indeed, those you worship besides Allāh do not possess for you [the power of] provision. So seek from Allāh provision and worship Him and be grateful to Him. To Him you will be returned."
Wain tukaththiboo faqad kaththaba omamun min qablikum wama ʿala alrrasooli illa albalaghu almubeenu
And if you [people] deny [the message] - already nations before you have denied. And there is not upon the Messenger except [the duty of] clear notification.
Awalam yaraw kayfa yubdio Allahu alkhalqa thumma yuʿeeduhu inna thalika ʿala Allahi yaseerun
Have they not considered how Allāh begins creation and then repeats it? Indeed that, for Allāh, is easy.
Qul seeroo fee alardi faonthuroo kayfa badaa alkhalqa thumma Allahu yunshio alnnashata alakhirata inna Allaha ʿala kulli shayin qadeerun
Say, [O Muḥammad], "Travel through the land and observe how He began creation. Then Allāh will produce the final creation [i.e., development]. Indeed Allāh, over all things, is competent."
Yuʿaththibu man yashao wayarhamu man yashao wailayhi tuqlaboona
He punishes whom He wills and has mercy upon whom He wills, and to Him you will be returned.
Wama antum bimuʿjizeena fee alardi wala fee alssamai wama lakum min dooni Allahi min waliyyin wala naseerin
And you will not cause failure [to Allāh] upon the earth or in the heaven. And you have not other than Allāh any protector or any helper.
Waallatheena kafaroo biayati Allahi waliqaihi olaika yaisoo min rahmatee waolaika lahum ʿathabun aleemun
And the ones who disbelieve in the signs of Allāh and the meeting with Him - those have despaired of My mercy, and they will have a painful punishment.
Fama kana jawaba qawmihi illa an qaloo oqtuloohu aw harriqoohu faanjahu Allahu mina alnnari inna fee thalika laayatin liqawmin yuminoona
And the answer of his [i.e., Abraham's] people was not but that they said, "Kill him or burn him," but Allāh saved him from the fire. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.
Waqala innama ittakhathtum min dooni Allahi awthanan mawaddata baynikum fee alhayati alddunya thumma yawma alqiyamati yakfuru baʿdukum bibaʿdin wayalʿanu baʿdukum baʿdan wamawakumu alnnaru wama lakum min nasireena
And [Abraham] said, "You have only taken, other than Allāh, idols as [a bond of] affection among you in worldly life. Then on the Day of Resurrection you will deny one another and curse one another, and your refuge will be the Fire, and you will not have any helpers."
Faamana lahu lootun waqala innee muhajirun ila rabbee innahu huwa alʿazeezu alhakeemu
And Lot believed him. [Abraham] said, "Indeed, I will emigrate to [the service of] my Lord. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise."
Wawahabna lahu ishaqa wayaʿqooba wajaʿalna fee thurriyyatihi alnnubuwwata waalkitaba waataynahu ajrahu fee alddunya wainnahu fee alakhirati lamina alssaliheena
And We gave to him Isaac and Jacob and placed in his descendants prophethood and scripture. And We gave him his reward in this world, and indeed, he is in the Hereafter among the righteous.
Walootan ith qala liqawmihi innakum latatoona alfahishata ma sabaqakum biha min ahadin mina alʿalameena
And [mention] Lot, when he said to his people, "Indeed, you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds.
Ainnakum latatoona alrrijala wataqtaʿoona alssabeela watatoona fee nadeekumu almunkara fama kana jawaba qawmihi illa an qaloo itina biʿathabi Allahi in kunta mina alssadiqeena
Indeed, you approach men and obstruct the road and commit in your meetings [every] evil." And the answer of his people was not but that they said, "Bring us the punishment of Allāh, if you should be of the truthful."
Qala rabbi onsurnee ʿala alqawmi almufsideena
He said, "My Lord, support me against the corrupting people."
Walamma jaat rusuluna ibraheema bialbushra qaloo inna muhlikoo ahli hathihi alqaryati inna ahlaha kanoo thalimeena
And when Our messengers [i.e., angels] came to Abraham with the good tidings, they said, "Indeed, we will destroy the people of that [i.e., Lot's] city. Indeed, its people have been wrongdoers."
Qala inna feeha lootan qaloo nahnu aʿlamu biman feeha lanunajjiyannahu waahlahu illa imraatahu kanat mina alghabireena
[Abraham] said, "Indeed, within it is Lot." They said, "We are more knowing of who is within it. We will surely save him and his family, except his wife. She is to be of those who remain behind."
Walamma an jaat rusuluna lootan seea bihim wadaqa bihim tharʿan waqaloo la takhaf wala tahzan inna munajjooka waahlaka illa imraataka kanat mina alghabireena
And when Our messengers [i.e., angels] came to Lot, he was distressed for them and felt for them great discomfort. They said, "Fear not, nor grieve. Indeed, we will save you and your family, except your wife; she is to be of those who remain behind.
Inna munziloona ʿala ahli hathihi alqaryati rijzan mina alssamai bima kanoo yafsuqoona
Indeed, we will bring down on the people of this city punishment from the sky because they have been defiantly disobedient."
Walaqad tarakna minha ayatan bayyinatan liqawmin yaʿqiloona
And We have certainly left of it a sign as clear evidence for a people who use reason.
Waila madyana akhahum shuʿayban faqala ya qawmi oʿbudoo Allaha waorjoo alyawma alakhira wala taʿthaw fee alardi mufsideena
And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shuʿayb, and he said, "O my people, worship Allāh and expect the Last Day and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption."
Fakaththaboohu faakhathathumu alrrajfatu faasbahoo fee darihim jathimeena
But they denied him, so the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone.
Waʿadan wathamooda waqad tabayyana lakum min masakinihim wazayyana lahumu alshshaytanu aʿmalahum fasaddahum ʿani alssabeeli wakanoo mustabsireena
And [We destroyed] ʿAad and Thamūd, and it has become clear to you from their [ruined] dwellings. And Satan had made pleasing to them their deeds and averted them from the path, and they were endowed with perception.
Waqaroona wafirʿawna wahamana walaqad jaahum moosa bialbayyinati faistakbaroo fee alardi wama kanoo sabiqeena
And [We destroyed] Qārūn and Pharaoh and Hāmān. And Moses had already come to them with clear evidences, and they were arrogant in the land, but they were not outrunners [of Our punishment].
Fakullan akhathna bithanbihi faminhum man arsalna ʿalayhi hasiban waminhum man akhathathu alssayhatu waminhum man khasafna bihi alarda waminhum man aghraqna wama kana Allahu liyathlimahum walakin kanoo anfusahum yathlimoona
So each We seized for his sin; and among them were those upon whom We sent a storm of stones, and among them were those who were seized by the blast [from the sky], and among them were those whom We caused the earth to swallow, and among them were those whom We drowned. And Allāh would not have wronged them, but it was they who were wronging themselves.
Mathalu allatheena ittakhathoo min dooni Allahi awliyaa kamathali alʿankabooti ittakhathat baytan wainna awhana albuyooti labaytu alʿankabooti law kanoo yaʿlamoona
The example of those who take allies other than Allāh is like that of the spider who takes [i.e., constructs] a home. And indeed, the weakest of homes is the home of the spider, if they only knew.
Inna Allaha yaʿlamu ma yadʿoona min doonihi min shayin wahuwa alʿazeezu alhakeemu
Indeed, Allāh knows whatever thing they call upon other than Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
And these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge.
Khalaqa Allahu alssamawati waalarda bialhaqqi inna fee thalika laayatan lilmumineena
Allāh created the heavens and the earth in truth. Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.
Otlu ma oohiya ilayka mina alkitabi waaqimi alssalata inna alssalata tanha ʿani alfahshai waalmunkari walathikru Allahi akbaru waAllahu yaʿlamu ma tasnaʿoona
Recite, [O Muḥammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allāh is greater. And Allāh knows that which you do.
Wala tujadiloo ahla alkitabi illa biallatee hiya ahsanu illa allatheena thalamoo minhum waqooloo amanna biallathee onzila ilayna waonzila ilaykum wailahuna wailahukum wahidun wanahnu lahu muslimoona
And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, "We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
Wakathalika anzalna ilayka alkitaba faallatheena ataynahumu alkitaba yuminoona bihi wamin haolai man yuminu bihi wama yajhadu biayatina illa alkafiroona
And thus We have sent down to you the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān]. And those to whom We [previously] gave the Scripture believe in it. And among these [people of Makkah] are those who believe in it. And none reject Our verses except the disbelievers.
Wama kunta tatloo min qablihi min kitabin wala takhuttuhu biyameenika ithan lairtaba almubtiloona
And you did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you inscribe one with your right hand. Then [i.e., otherwise] the falsifiers would have had [cause for] doubt.
Bal huwa ayatun bayyinatun fee sudoori allatheena ootoo alʿilma wama yajhadu biayatina illa alththalimoona
Rather, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is distinct verses [preserved] within the breasts of those who have been given knowledge. And none reject Our verses except the wrongdoers.
Waqaloo lawla onzila ʿalayhi ayatun min rabbihi qul innama alayatu ʿinda Allahi wainnama ana natheerun mubeenun
But they say, "Why are not signs sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "The signs are only with Allāh, and I am only a clear warner."
Awalam yakfihim anna anzalna ʿalayka alkitaba yutla ʿalayhim inna fee thalika larahmatan wathikra liqawmin yuminoona
And is it not sufficient for them that We revealed to you the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] which is recited to them? Indeed in that is a mercy and reminder for a people who believe.
Qul kafa biAllahi baynee wabaynakum shaheedan yaʿlamu ma fee alssamawati waalardi waallatheena amanoo bialbatili wakafaroo biAllahi olaika humu alkhasiroona
Say, "Sufficient is Allāh between me and you as Witness. He knows what is in the heavens and earth. And they who have believed in falsehood and disbelieved in Allāh - it is those who are the losers."
Wayastaʿjiloonaka bialʿathabi walawla ajalun musamman lajaahumu alʿathabu walayatiyannahum baghtatan wahum la yashʿuroona
And they urge you to hasten the punishment. And if not for [the decree of] a specified term, punishment would have reached them. But it will surely come to them suddenly while they perceive not.
Yastaʿjiloonaka bialʿathabi wainna jahannama lamuheetatun bialkafireena
They urge you to hasten the punishment. And indeed, Hell will be encompassing of the disbelievers
Yawma yaghshahumu alʿathabu min fawqihim wamin tahti arjulihim wayaqoolu thooqoo ma kuntum taʿmaloona
On the Day the punishment will cover them from above them and from below their feet and it is said, "Taste [the result of] what you used to do."
Ya ʿibadiya allatheena amanoo inna ardee wasiʿatun faiyyaya faoʿbudooni
O My servants who have believed, indeed My earth is spacious, so worship only Me.
Kullu nafsin thaiqatu almawti thumma ilayna turjaʿoona
Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned.
Waallatheena amanoo waʿamiloo alssalihati lanubawwiannahum mina aljannati ghurafan tajree min tahtiha alanharu khalideena feeha niʿma ajru alʿamileena
And those who have believed and done righteous deeds - We will surely assign to them of Paradise [elevated] chambers beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. Excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers
Allatheena sabaroo waʿala rabbihim yatawakkaloona
Who have been patient and upon their Lord rely.
Wakaayyin min dabbatin la tahmilu rizqaha Allahu yarzuquha waiyyakum wahuwa alssameeʿu alʿaleemu
And how many a creature carries not its [own] provision. Allāh provides for it and for you. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
Walain saaltahum man khalaqa alssamawati waalarda wasakhkhara alshshamsa waalqamara layaqoolunna Allahu faanna yufakoona
If you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth and subjected the sun and the moon?" they would surely say, "Allāh." Then how are they deluded?
Allahu yabsutu alrrizqa liman yashao min ʿibadihi wayaqdiru lahu inna Allaha bikulli shayin ʿaleemun
Allāh extends provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts for him. Indeed Allāh is, of all things, Knowing.
Walain saaltahum man nazzala mina alssamai maan faahya bihi alarda min baʿdi mawtiha layaqoolunna Allahu quli alhamdu lillahi bal aktharuhum la yaʿqiloona
And if you asked them, "Who sends down rain from the sky and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness?" they would surely say, "Allāh." Say, "Praise to Allāh"; but most of them do not reason.
Wama hathihi alhayatu alddunya illa lahwun walaʿibun wainna alddara alakhirata lahiya alhayawanu law kanoo yaʿlamoona
And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.
Faitha rakiboo fee alfulki daʿawoo Allaha mukhliseena lahu alddeena falamma najjahum ila albarri itha hum yushrikoona
And when they board a ship, they supplicate Allāh, sincere to Him in religion [i.e., faith and hope]. But when He delivers them to the land, at once they associate others with Him
Liyakfuroo bima ataynahum waliyatamattaʿoo fasawfa yaʿlamoona
So that they will deny what We have granted them, and they will enjoy themselves. But they are going to know.
Awalam yaraw anna jaʿalna haraman aminan wayutakhattafu alnnasu min hawlihim afabialbatili yuminoona wabiniʿmati Allahi yakfuroona
Have they not seen that We made [Makkah] a safe sanctuary, while people are being taken away all around them? Then in falsehood do they believe, and in the favor of Allāh they disbelieve?
Waman athlamu mimmani iftara ʿala Allahi kathiban aw kaththaba bialhaqqi lamma jaahu alaysa fee jahannama mathwan lilkafireena
And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allāh or denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a [sufficient] residence for the disbelievers?
Waallatheena jahadoo feena lanahdiyannahum subulana wainna Allaha lamaʿa almuhsineena
And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allāh is with the doers of good.

About this surah
Name
The Surah takes its name from verse 41 in which the word Ankabut (Spider) has occurred.
Period of Revelation
Verses 56-60 clearly show that this Surah was sent down a little before the migration to Habash, and this is supported by the internal evidence of the subject matter as well. Some commentators have opined that since it mentions the hypocrites, and hypocrisy appeared in Madinah, the first ten verses of this Surah were revealed at Madinah and the rest of it at Makkah; whereas the people whose hypocrisy has been mentioned here are those who had adopted a hypocritical way of life because they were afraid of the oppression and extreme physical torture to which the Muslims were being subjected by the disbelievers. Evidently, this kind of hypocrisy could be there only at Makkah and not at Madinah. Similarly, some other commentators, seeing that in this Surah the Muslims have been exhorted to migrate, have regarded it as the last Surah to be revealed at Makkah, whereas the Muslims had migrated to Habash even before their migration to Madinah. These opinions are not based on any tradition but on the internal evidence of the subject matter, and this internal evidence, when considered against the subject matter of the Surah as a whole, points to the conditions prevailing at the time of the migration to Habash and not to the last stage at Makkah.
Theme and Subject matter
A close examination of the Surah shows that the period of its revelation occurred at a time of extreme persecution of the Muslims in Makkah. The disbelievers were opposing and fighting Islam vehemently, and new converts were being subjected to severe oppression. It was under such conditions that Allah sent down this Surah to strengthen and encourage the sincere Muslims as well as to put to shame those who were showing weakness of the faith. Besides, the disbelievers of Makkah have been threatened and warned not to invite for themselves the fate that the antagonists of the Truth have been experiencing in every age.
The disbelievers were urging their offsprings to abandon Muhammad (may Allah's peace be upon him), and return to their ancestral religion, for they argued: "The Qur'an in which you have put your faith, regards the rights of the parents as the uppermost; therefore, listen to what we say; otherwise you will be working against the dictates of your own Faith." This has been answered in verse 8.
Similarly, people of some clans said to the new converts to Islam, "Leave the question of punishments, etc., to us. Listen to us and abandon this man. If God seizes you in the Hereafter, we will come forward and say, 'Lord, these people are innocent: we had forced them to give up the Faith; therefore, seize us'." This has been dealt with, in vv. 12-13.
The stories mentioned in this Surah also impress the same point mostly, as if to say, "Look at the Prophets of the past: they were made to suffer great hardships and were treated cruelly for long periods. Then, at last they were helped by Allah. Therefore, take heart: Allah's help will certainly come but a period of trial and tribulation has to be undergone." Besides teaching this lesson to the Muslims, the disbelievers also have been warned, as if to say, "If you are not being immediately seized by Allah, you should not form the wrong impression that you will never be seized. The signs of the doomed nations of the past are before you. Just see how they met their doom and how Allah helped the Prophets."
The Muslims were instructed to the effect: "If you feel that the persecution has become unbearable for you, you should give up your homes, instead of giving up your Faith: Allah's earth is vast: seek a new place where you can worship Allah with the full peace of mind." Besides all this, the disbelievers also have been urged to understand Islam. The realities of Tauhid and the Hereafter have been impressed with rational arguments, shirk has been refuted, and drawing their attention towards the signs of the universe, they have been told that all these Signs confirm the teachings that the Prophet is presenting before them.
