  1. 39:1Read in the mushaf ↗

Tanzeelu alkitabi mina Allahi alʿazeezi alhakeemi

The revelation of the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] is from Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

  2. 39:2Read in the mushaf ↗

Inna anzalna ilayka alkitaba bialhaqqi faoʿbudi Allaha mukhlisan lahu alddeena

Indeed, We have sent down to you the Book, [O Muḥammad], in truth. So worship Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion.

  3. 39:3Read in the mushaf ↗

Ala lillahi alddeenu alkhalisu waallatheena ittakhathoo min doonihi awliyaa ma naʿbuduhum illa liyuqarriboona ila Allahi zulfa inna Allaha yahkumu baynahum fee ma hum feehi yakhtalifoona inna Allaha la yahdee man huwa kathibun kaffarun

Unquestionably, for Allāh is the pure religion. And those who take protectors besides Him [say], "We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allāh in position." Indeed, Allāh will judge between them concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, Allāh does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever.

  4. 39:4Read in the mushaf ↗

Law arada Allahu an yattakhitha waladan laistafa mimma yakhluqu ma yashao subhanahu huwa Allahu alwahidu alqahharu

If Allāh had intended to take a son, He could have chosen from what He creates whatever He willed. Exalted is He; He is Allāh, the One, the Prevailing.

  5. 39:5Read in the mushaf ↗

Khalaqa alssamawati waalarda bialhaqqi yukawwiru allayla ʿala alnnahari wayukawwiru alnnahara ʿala allayli wasakhkhara alshshamsa waalqamara kullun yajree liajalin musamman ala huwa alʿazeezu alghaffaru

He created the heavens and earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver.

  6. 39:6Read in the mushaf ↗

Khalaqakum min nafsin wahidatin thumma jaʿala minha zawjaha waanzala lakum mina alanʿami thamaniyata azwajin yakhluqukum fee butooni ommahatikum khalqan min baʿdi khalqin fee thulumatin thalathin thalikumu Allahu rabbukum lahu almulku la ilaha illa huwa faanna tusrafoona

He created you from one soul. Then He made from it its mate, and He produced for you from the grazing livestock eight mates. He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, within three darknesses. That is Allāh, your Lord; to Him belongs dominion. There is no deity except Him, so how are you averted?

  7. 39:7Read in the mushaf ↗

In takfuroo fainna Allaha ghaniyyun ʿankum wala yarda liʿibadihi alkufra wain tashkuroo yardahu lakum wala taziru waziratun wizra okhra thumma ila rabbikum marjiʿukum fayunabbiokum bima kuntum taʿmaloona innahu ʿaleemun bithati alssudoori

If you disbelieve - indeed, Allāh is Free from need of you. And He does not approve for His servants disbelief. And if you are grateful, He approves [i.e., likes] it for you; and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you about what you used to do. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.

  8. 39:8Read in the mushaf ↗

Waitha massa alinsana durrun daʿa rabbahu muneeban ilayhi thumma itha khawwalahu niʿmatan minhu nasiya ma kana yadʿoo ilayhi min qablu wajaʿala lillahi andadan liyudilla ʿan sabeelihi qul tamattaʿ bikufrika qaleelan innaka min ashabi alnnari

And when adversity touches man, he calls upon his Lord, turning to Him [alone]; then when He bestows on him a favor from Himself, he forgets Him whom he called upon before, and he attributes to Allāh equals to mislead [people] from His way. Say, "Enjoy your disbelief for a little; indeed, you are of the companions of the Fire."

  9. 39:9Read in the mushaf ↗

Amman huwa qanitun anaa allayli sajidan waqaiman yahtharu alakhirata wayarjoo rahmata rabbihi qul hal yastawee allatheena yaʿlamoona waallatheena la yaʿlamoona innama yatathakkaru oloo alalbabi

Is one who is devoutly obedient during periods of the night, prostrating and standing [in prayer], fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, [like one who does not]? Say, "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?" Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.

  10. 39:10Read in the mushaf ↗

Qul ya ʿibadi allatheena amanoo ittaqoo rabbakum lillatheena ahsanoo fee hathihi alddunya hasanatun waardu Allahi wasiʿatun innama yuwaffa alssabiroona ajrahum bighayri hisabin

Say, "O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good, and the earth of Allāh is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account [i.e., limit]."

  11. 39:11Read in the mushaf ↗

Qul innee omirtu an aʿbuda Allaha mukhlisan lahu alddeena

Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, I have been commanded to worship Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion.

  12. 39:12Read in the mushaf ↗

    Waomirtu lian akoona awwala almuslimeena

And I have been commanded to be the first [among you] of the Muslims."

  13. 39:13Read in the mushaf ↗

Qul innee akhafu in ʿasaytu rabbee ʿathaba yawmin ʿatheemin

Say, "Indeed I fear, if I should disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day."

  14. 39:14Read in the mushaf ↗

Quli Allaha aʿbudu mukhlisan lahu deenee

Say, "Allāh [alone] do I worship, sincere to Him in my religion,

  15. 39:15Read in the mushaf ↗

Faoʿbudoo ma shitum min doonihi qul inna alkhasireena allatheena khasiroo anfusahum waahleehim yawma alqiyamati ala thalika huwa alkhusranu almubeenu

So worship what you will besides Him." Say, "Indeed, the losers are the ones who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Unquestionably, that is the manifest loss."

  16. 39:16Read in the mushaf ↗

Lahum min fawqihim thulalun mina alnnari wamin tahtihim thulalun thalika yukhawwifu Allahu bihi ʿibadahu ya ʿibadi faittaqooni

They will have canopies [i.e., layers] of fire above them and below them, canopies. By that Allāh threatens [i.e., warns] His servants. O My servants, then fear Me.

  17. 39:17Read in the mushaf ↗

Waallatheena ijtanaboo alttaghoota an yaʿbudooha waanaboo ila Allahi lahumu albushra fabashshir ʿibadi

But those who have avoided ṭāghūt, lest they worship it, and turned back to Allāh - for them are good tidings. So give good tidings to My servants

  18. 39:18Read in the mushaf ↗

Allatheena yastamiʿoona alqawla fayattabiʿoona ahsanahu olaika allatheena hadahumu Allahu waolaika hum oloo alalbabi

Who listen to speech and follow the best of it. Those are the ones Allāh has guided, and those are people of understanding.

  19. 39:19Read in the mushaf ↗

Afaman haqqa ʿalayhi kalimatu alʿathabi afaanta tunqithu man fee alnnari

Then, is one who has deserved the decree of punishment [to be guided]? Then, can you save one who is in the Fire?

  20. 39:20Read in the mushaf ↗

Lakini allatheena ittaqaw rabbahum lahum ghurafun min fawqiha ghurafun mabniyyatun tajree min tahtiha alanharu waʿda Allahi la yukhlifu Allahu almeeʿada

But those who have feared their Lord - for them are chambers, above them chambers built high, beneath which rivers flow. [This is] the promise of Allāh. Allāh does not fail in [His] promise.

  21. 39:21Read in the mushaf ↗

Alam tara anna Allaha anzala mina alssamai maan fasalakahu yanabeeʿa fee alardi thumma yukhriju bihi zarʿan mukhtalifan alwanuhu thumma yaheeju fatarahu musfarran thumma yajʿaluhu hutaman inna fee thalika lathikra liolee alalbabi

Do you not see that Allāh sends down rain from the sky and makes it flow as springs [and rivers] in the earth; then He produces thereby crops of varying colors; then they dry and you see them turned yellow; then He makes them [scattered] debris. Indeed in that is a reminder for those of understanding.

  22. 39:22Read in the mushaf ↗

Afaman sharaha Allahu sadrahu lilislami fahuwa ʿala noorin min rabbihi fawaylun lilqasiyati quloobuhum min thikri Allahi olaika fee dalalin mubeenin

So is one whose breast Allāh has expanded to [accept] Islām and he is upon [i.e., guided by] a light from his Lord [like one whose heart rejects it]? Then woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of Allāh. Those are in manifest error.

  23. 39:23Read in the mushaf ↗

Allahu nazzala ahsana alhadeethi kitaban mutashabihan mathaniya taqshaʿirru minhu juloodu allatheena yakhshawna rabbahum thumma taleenu julooduhum waquloobuhum ila thikri Allahi thalika huda Allahi yahdee bihi man yashao waman yudlili Allahu fama lahu min hadin

Allāh has sent down the best statement: a consistent Book wherein is reiteration. The skins shiver therefrom of those who fear their Lord; then their skins and their hearts relax at the remembrance [i.e., mention] of Allāh. That is the guidance of Allāh by which He guides whom He wills. And one whom Allāh sends astray - for him there is no guide.

  24. 39:24Read in the mushaf ↗

Afaman yattaqee biwajhihi sooa alʿathabi yawma alqiyamati waqeela lilththalimeena thooqoo ma kuntum taksiboona

Then is he who will shield with his face the worst of the punishment on the Day of Resurrection [like one secure from it]? And it will be said to the wrongdoers, "Taste what you used to earn."

  25. 39:25Read in the mushaf ↗

Those before them denied, and punishment came upon them from where they did not perceive.

  26. 39:26Read in the mushaf ↗

Faathaqahumu Allahu alkhizya fee alhayati alddunya walaʿathabu alakhirati akbaru law kanoo yaʿlamoona

So Allāh made them taste disgrace in worldly life. But the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.

  27. 39:27Read in the mushaf ↗

Walaqad darabna lilnnasi fee hatha alqurani min kulli mathalin laʿallahum yatathakkaroona

And We have certainly presented for the people in this Qur’ān from every [kind of] example - that they might remember.

  28. 39:28Read in the mushaf ↗

Quranan ʿarabiyyan ghayra thee ʿiwajin laʿallahum yattaqoona

[It is] an Arabic Qur’ān, without any deviance that they might become righteous.

  29. 39:29Read in the mushaf ↗

Daraba Allahu mathalan rajulan feehi shurakao mutashakisoona warajulan salaman lirajulin hal yastawiyani mathalan alhamdu lillahi bal aktharuhum la yaʿlamoona

Allāh presents an example: a man [i.e., slave] owned by quarreling partners and another belonging exclusively to one man - are they equal in comparison? Praise be to Allāh! But most of them do not know.

  30. 39:30Read in the mushaf ↗

    Innaka mayyitun wainnahum mayyitoona

Indeed, you are to die, and indeed, they are to die.

  31. 39:31Read in the mushaf ↗

Thumma innakum yawma alqiyamati ʿinda rabbikum takhtasimoona

Then indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, before your Lord, will dispute.

  32. 39:32Read in the mushaf ↗

Faman athlamu mimman kathaba ʿala Allahi wakaththaba bialssidqi ith jaahu alaysa fee jahannama mathwan lilkafireena

So who is more unjust than one who lies about Allāh and denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a residence for the disbelievers?

  33. 39:33Read in the mushaf ↗

Waallathee jaa bialssidqi wasaddaqa bihi olaika humu almuttaqoona

And the one who has brought the truth [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)] and [they who] believed in it - those are the righteous.

  34. 39:34Read in the mushaf ↗

Lahum ma yashaoona ʿinda rabbihim thalika jazao almuhsineena

Qeela odkhuloo abwaba jahannama khalideena feeha fabisa mathwa almutakabbireena

[To them] it will be said, "Enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and wretched is the residence of the arrogant."

  73. 39:73Read in the mushaf ↗

But those who feared their Lord will be driven to Paradise in groups until, when they reach it while its gates have been opened and its keepers say, "Peace be upon you; you have become pure; so enter it to abide eternally therein," [they will enter].

  74. 39:74Read in the mushaf ↗

And you will see the angels surrounding the Throne, exalting [Allāh] with praise of their Lord. And it will be judged between them in truth, and it will be said, "[All] praise to Allāh, Lord of the worlds."

About this surah

Name

The Surah derives its name from verse 71 and 73 in which the word zumar has occurred.

Period of Revelation

In verse 10 (wa ardullah-i-wasi atun : and Allah's earth is vast) there is abundant evidence that this Surah was sent down before the migration to Habash. Some traditions provide the explanation that this verse was sent down in respect of Hadrat Ja'far bin Abi Talib and his companions when they made up their mind to emigrate to Habash.(Ruh al-Maani, vol. XXII, p. 226).

Theme and Subject matter

The entire Surah is a most eloquent and effective address which was given some time before the emigration to Habash, in an environment filled with tyranny and persecution, ill-will and antagonism, at Makkah. It is a sermon whose addressees mainly are the unbelieving Quraish, although here and there the believers also have been addressed. In it the real aim of the invitation of Muhammad (upon whom be Allah's peace and blessings) had been enunciated, which is this:Man should adopt Allah's servitude sincerely, and should not pollute his God worship with the service of any other. Presenting this cardinal principle in different ways over and over again, the truth of Tauhid and the excellent results of accepting it, and the falsehood of shirk and the evil consequences of following it, have been explained in a most forceful way, and the people exhorted to give up their wrong way of life and return to the mercy of their Lord. In this very connection, the believers have been instructed, as if to say:"If a place has become narrow for the worship and service of Allah, His earth is vast: you may emigrate to some other place in order to save your faith: Allah will reward you for your patience."On the other hand, the Holy Prophet has been encouraged, so as to say:"Tell the disbelievers plainly that they may do whatever they like, but their persecutions and tyrannies will never deter you from the way of Islam; that they may go on doing their worst to obstruct your way, but you will continue to perform your mission in spite of the adverse conditions and circumstances."
